Girl’s basketball, wrestling tournament schedules set
Now that 2006 is here that means that it won’t be all that long until girl’s and boy’s basketball teams along with wrestling teams will be making final preparations for their respective state tournament trails.

Here is a look at who is scheduled to play who, starting with area girls basketball teams.

Class 1A - Ed-Co Vikings: The Vikings are assigned to the upper bracket of Region 7. All first round upper bracket games will be played on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m.; second round games (district finals) will be played on Saturday, Feb. 18; the regional semifinal will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with the regional final being contested on Friday, Feb. 24, in Manchester at 7:00 p.m.

The Vikings will open play in Edgewood against Central City. The winner of that contest will play the winner of the Janesville vs. Dunkerton game in a district final contest in Dunkerton.

The top half of the upper bracket has Lansing Kee High facing Postville, in Postville; and Tripoli squaring off against West Central of Maynard in Maynard.

The lower bracket of Region 7 has the following four games - Andrew vs. Bellevue Marquette; Preston vs. Clinton Prince of Peace; Olin vs. East Central; and Alburnett vs. Lisbon. The winner of the Olin/East Central game will face Calamus Wheatland and the winner of the Alburnett/Lisbon game will fave Springville in a district semifinal game before advancing on to district final contests.

Class 2A - Maquoketa Valley Wildcats: The Wildcats are assigned to the upper bracket of the 16 team Region 7. All first round Class 2A games will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m.; second round games will be played on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m.; Regional semifinal contests will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 21 also at 7:00 p.m. and the Regional Final will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m.

The Wildcats will open tournament play at home in Delhi against Midland of Wyoming. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Monticello vs. Tipton contest. On the other side of the upper half of the bracket Turkey Valley will play South Winneshiek while Starmont will square off against North Fayette.

The lower bracket of Region 7 has Valley Community playing MFL-Mar-Mac; Clayton Ridge playing Central Elkader; Cascade playing Dyersville Beckman; and Bellevue playing Northeast.

The upper half regional semifinal will be played in Manchester on Tuesday, Feb. 21 starting at 7:00 p.m.

Class 3A - West Delaware Hawks: The Hawks are in the eight team bracket comprising Region 7. The Class 3A tournament gets under way on Thursday, Feb. 6 with all the regional quarterfinals all beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Hawks will face off against WaMaC Conference foe Marion, in Marion. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the Anamosa/Cedar Rapids Xavier game at Cedar Rapids Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 18.

On the other side of the eight team bracket are Maquoketa vs. Dubuque Wahlert and Western Dubuque vs. Central DeWitt.

The regional final will be held at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 25.

In Class 1A wrestling the Ed-Co Vikings will compete in their sectional at East Buchanan along with Alburnett, Cascade, Central City, East Buchanan, Jesup, Maquoketa Valley, North Linn and Springville. The top two placewinners at each weight will advance to district tournament action at Starmont. Joining the Starmont district tournament will be qualifiers from the Postville sectional made up of Central Elkader, Clayton Ridge, Postville, South Winn, Turkey Valley, Valley of Elgin, and Wapsie Valley.

The Hawks of West Delaware will be competing in the Class 2A wrestling tournament this year. Their sectional will be held at Independence with the following teams in the field of six: West Delaware, Dyersville Beckman, Waterloo Columbus, Denver, Independence and Oelwein.

At their district meet at Upper Iowa University the Hawks will be joined by placewinners from the Cresco sectional which included Crestwood, MFL-Mar-Mac, New Hampton, North Fayette, Sumner-Fredericksburg, and Waukon.

Sectionals are on Saturday, Feb. 11, while Districts will be on Saturday, Feb. 18.
