Hawks outlast Osky, claim CR Jefferson Invite title |
The past two Saturday's have been an excellent test for the West Delaware Hawk wrestling team.
After taking third in the team race at the Benton Community Tournament (Jan. 7) the Hawks claimed the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Invitational title this past Saturday by six points over a very good Oskaloosa team.
There were teams from Fort Madison to Ft. Dodge in the tournament which had some 36 ranked wrestlers and four ranked teams.
The Hawks placed three wrestlers in the finals and crowned one champion in Zach McCool (130-pounds).
Dustin Jaeger (152) and Nate Lahr (160) were the Hawks other finalists, both wrestled extremely good individuals and lost close matches.
In winning the tournament the Hawks scored 156 points to 150 for Oskaloosa. Waverly-Shell Rock placed third with 149 points.

The first two rounds of the tournament went a long way in the end towards the team championship. The Hawks did not lose a first round match and advanced seven wrestlers to the semi-finals with three making it to the finals.

On Thursday night the Hawks traveled to Maquoketa for a WaMaC Conference double dual with the host Cardinals and the Marion Indians.
The Hawks were very impressive in both of the duals as they topped Marion 53-16 and Maquoketa 54-19.
The two wins upped the Hawks WaMaC record to 6-0. They will have a chance to up that mark to 7-0 when they host South Tama this Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.

Two big WaMaC Conference home wins last week has given the West Delaware girls basketball team the lead in the WaMaC Conference East Division.
The Hawks are 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the East Division of the conference.
On Tuesday night the Hawks got off to a slow start against Marion but put together a huge defensive effort over the final two periods to emerge with a hard fought 54-51 win.
Junior Katie Wessels scored nine of her game high 19 points during the first quarter to keep the Hawks in the game.

Marion led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Indians outscored the Hawks 12-5 over the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding 30-17 lead.
It was at that point the Hawks found their stride. By the end of the quarter they had cut the Marion lead to just eight points, 34-26.
The Hawks just kept inching closer and finally got to within three points on back-to-back baskets by Katie Wessels as the third quarter came to an end.
The Hawks took their first lead, 47-46, on a driving lay-up by Jenny Hood with 4:26 left in the game.
Marion tied the score at 49-49 with 2:13 left but the Hawks scored the next five points to take a 54-49 lead and hung on for the three-point victory.

On Friday night the Hawks hosted Vinton Shellsburg and handed the Vikings a 29-point, 72-43 loss.
West Delaware raced out to a 25-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased that lead to 39-21 by half time.
A big third quarter put the game out of reach as all 12 players that got in the game broke into the scoring column.

 The West Delaware boys team started the week with an impressive 68-60 overtime win over a very strong Decorah Viking team in Manchester.
For most of the game the Hawks fought an uphill battle. They trailed 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and 33-26 on a three-point basket by Decorah at the buzzer.
The Hawks had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore BJ Hermsen with 26 points. Brett Manternach tallied 18 and Eric Crawford tossed in 11.
Hermsen also pulled down 12 rebounds while Crawford handed out a team high 8 assists.

By the end of the third quarter the Hawks faced a 12-point deficit, 47-35.
The Hawks were still down by 10 points with 6:06 left in the game when they went on a 10-0 run to knot the score at 51-51.
West Delaware got its first lead of the game when Eric Crawford nailed a long three-pointer to make the score 56-55.
Decorah managed to tie the score on a last second shot to end regulation, 59-59.
In the overtime Decorah scored the first point but never scored again as the Hawks ran off nine unanswered points to pick up the important win.

Following their big win over Decorah on Monday night the Hawks had to travel to Marion on Tuesday night for a tough WaMaC contest.
The Hawks never found their legs after expending so much energy the night before as they fell to the Indians by a score of 60-43.
The Hawks trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 32-20 at the half.
The third quarter nine-point deficit left Marion with a 21-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of action.

The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat boys got off to a fast start, 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, to defeat Center Point Urbana, 58-47, last Tuesday night.
Brett Huber canned four of five three-point shots and led the Cats in scoring with 21 points. Donny Nordmann was the only other Wildcat to score in double figures with 12 points.
The Cats took a 29-18 lead at the half. The two teams played an even second half, each scoring 29 points.
“We were really pleased with the heart our kids showed. We were able to win on a night when we weren't as sharp offensively as we wanted to be. |
We have been stressing how important the first four minutes of each half is and our kids came out strong in the first quarter. We knew the Pointers would not go away because of hard they play. Our kids stepped to the line late in the game and hit some big free throws,” commented Coach Scott Kregel.

On Friday night the Cats hosted the East Buchanan Bucs in a key Tri-Rivers Conference contest.
Again it was a fast start for the Cats as they jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and 15-8 at the end of the first quarter. They would maintain that lead throughout most of the game as they posted a 61-52 victory over the Bucs.
Donny Nordmann and Casey Lechtenberg led the Cats in scoring against he Bucs with 16 and 12 points respectively.
East Buchanan cut the Cat lead to three points, 19-16 late in the second quarter before Jeremy Dircks and Brian Wolf scored just before half time to give the Cats a 23-16 lead at the break.
Maquoketa Valley upped their lead to 14 points on an Aaron Jay basket with 2:30 left in the third quarter. East Buchanan scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the Wildcat lead to nine points, 38-29 heading into the fourth period.
The Cats scored eight quick points to open the final period and were never seriously threatened after that run.
The Cats made 11 free throws during the games final two minutes to secure the 61-52 win.
“Our players showed great poise and composure in this game. We knew a big key for us would be to attack their pressure intelligently. Our seniors showed great leadership and our bench play was just outstanding. We have had two great crowds since Christmas Break, and it provided us with a big lift again tonight,” commented Coach Kregel.

Viking girls top EB, Anamosa |
The Ed-Co Viking girls picked up a pair of big Tri-Rivers Conference wins last week by defeating East Buchanan 61-41 on Tuesday night and and Anamosa 60-40 on Friday night.
The Vikings got off to a bit of a slow start against the Bucs as they trailed 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. However, they owned the second and third quarters by a total score of 34-11 to cruise to the 20-point victory.
Three players scored in double figures led by Mindy Meyer with 16 points. Tiffany Kruse tossed in 11 while Tiffany Dugan scored 10.
The Vikings held a 42-26 rebounding advantage.
“I was very pleased with this game as I felt it was our most complete game of the season. We did a great job on defense and on the boards against a very talented East Buchanan squad,” commented Coach Roger Wright.

On Thursday night the Vikings traveled to Anamosa where they defeated the Raiders 60-40.
The Vikings jumped out to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and were up by 12 points, 28-16 by intermission.
Tiffany Dugan was the Vikings leading scorer with 18 points, followed by Mindy Meyer with 14.
Meyer also added 14 rebounds while Nikki Lueken grabbed 10 boards.
The Viking defense held the Raiders to just 25% shooting from the floor.
“This was a good win for us on the road. I was extremely pleased with the way we rebounded the ball as we held a 26 board margin. I was also pleased with the way we started both halves, especially the second half,” commented Coach Wright.
