Hawks run the table, claim WaMaC Dual Title

There is a popular commercial saying going around right now - “you can take life as it comes or you can grab life by the horns.”

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team did the latter last Tuesday night as they downed both Western Dubuque and the number one rated Mustangs of Independence to claim the WaMaC Conference Dual Meet title.

The Hawks had a huge night before a jam packed crowd at the Mustang gym in Independence.

In their first dual of the night the Hawks defeated a very good Western Dubuque Bobcat team, 48-21.

They then followed that with a 33-30 win over previously undefeated and top ranked in Class 2A Independence.

The Hawks won eight of the 14 matches, picking up bonus points in of the matches as Zach McCool (130), Chris Harbaugh (140) and Tyler Manternach (145) won by fall.

In the matches decided by decision the largest margin of victory for either side was four points, that by the Hawks Nate Lahr, 9-5, over the Mustangs Scott Soukup at 160-pounds.

Three matches were decided by a single point and two others by just two points.

Tyler Manternach (145) got the Hawks off to an excellent start with a second period pin. Dustin Jaeger (152) and Nate Lahr (160) followed with decision wins giving the Hawks a 12-0 lead.

The Hawks and the Mustangs split the next four matches. Andy O’Loughlin won by fall over the Hawks Jamie Vaske at 171 to cut the Hawk lead to 12-6. Tony Marbach then posted a thrilling 3-2 win over Nick O’Loughlin at 189 to move the Hawks ahead 15-6.

West Delaware forfeited to the Mustangs Ben Lehman at 215 and moved regular 215-pounder Steve Broghammer up to heavyweight where the Mustangs countered with Matt Shannon.

Broghammer edged out Shannon 2-0 to give the Hawks an 18-12 lead.

At 103 the Hawks Nathan Vaske recorded a 2-0 decision to up the Hawk lead to nine points at 21-12.

The Mustangs then ran off three straight wins including falls at 112 and 119 to grab a 27-21 lead with just three matches left.

Zach McCool (130) pinned the Mustangs Adam Endres in the first period to knot the score at 27-27.
With the last two matches (135, 140) of the night going on at the same time the action was fast and furious.

At 140 the Hawks Chris Harbaugh recorded a first period pin to give the Hawks a 33-27 lead. On the next mat at 135 the Hawks Adam Rave was in a tough match with the Mustangs Cody Thompson. Thompson won the battle, 3-2, but the Hawks won the war, 33-30.

The win capped off a perfect WaMaC Conference Dual season for West Delaware and gave them the conference dual meet title.

In the first meet of the night the Hawks topped the Bobcats of Western Dubuque 48-21 to set up the showdown with the top ranked Mustangs.

Against the Bobcats the meet started at 140 pounds.

Following Chris Harbaughs hard fought 12-5 loss the Hawks won six of the next seven matches to race out to a 33-6 lead.

The two teams split the final six matches and the meet.

Picking up wins for the Hawks were Tyler Manternach (145), Dustin Jaeger (152), Jamie Vaske (171), Tony Marbach (189), Steve Broghammer (215), Paul Broghammer (275), Nick Ketchum (125), Zach McCool (130) and Adam Rave (135).

On Thursday night the Hawks kept things going with a 73-6 win over the visiting Oelwein Huskies.
For the meet the Hawks recorded seven falls, two technical falls and a decision in addition to picking up three forfeits.

Winning by fall were Nathan Vaske, Nick Ketchum, Zach McCool, Adam Rave, Chris Harbaugh, Tony Marbach and Steve Broghammer.

Dustin Jaeger and Nate Lahr each recorded technical falls while Shawn Flanagann (112) made a first period takedown stand up for an exciting 2-0 win.

On Saturday the Hawks continued to roll as they hosted their first ever dual meet tournament.

Joining the Hawks in the four team tournament were Clayton Ridge, Iowa Falls and Crestwood.

For the tournament the Hawks won 35 of 42 matches while defeating Iowa Falls 59-4, Clayton Ridge 78-6 and Crestwood 41-23.

During the tournament the Hawks Zach McCool became the second Hawk wrestler this season to top the 100 career win mark. Earlier in the year Dustin Jaeger became the 11th West Delaware wrestler in school history to also reach that coveted century mark.

McCool also set a new West Delaware record for pins in a season with his 27th fall. The old mark of 26 was held jointly by Chad Wickman (1995 state champion at 112) and Casey Doyle (1996 state champion at 119).

The six dual meet wins last week gave the Hawks a 17-1 dual meet record for the season.

Now all that remains are the three biggest tournaments of the year - Sectionals, Districts and State.

This Saturday the Hawks will travel to Independence for their Sectional Tournament. There will be six teams in the field, West Delaware, Oelwein, Dyersville Beckman, Denver-Tripoli, Waterloo Columbus and host Independence.

The top two place finishers in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to the District Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14th.

District Tournament action will be held a Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

The Sectional team champion will advance to a Regional Dual Team Tournament next Tuesday night for the right to wrestle in the State Dual Tournament at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 4th.

The doors will open at 10:00 a.m. with wrestling scheduled to get underway at 12:00 noon.


Hawk girls top Maquoketa
The West Delaware girls basketball team clinched no worse than a tie for the WaMaC Conference East Division title last Tuesday night with a dominating 52-26 win over visiting Maquoketa.

The Hawks raised their overall record to 10-9, 7-2 in East Division action with the win over the Cardinals.

The Hawks will have a chance to claim the title outright tonight (Tuesday) when they travel to DeWitt Central for a game with the Sabers.

On Friday night the Hawks will close out their regular season at home when they host the highly rated Knights of LaPorte City Union for Senior Night.

Against Maquoketa the Hawks put the game on ice early with a 10-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 22-11 lead at half time.

Sam Conrad and Jackie Mullis led the Hawks in scoring with 14 and 11 points respectively.

The Hawks totally dominated the boards with Mullis grabbing a team high 12 rebounds. The Hawks held a huge 36-17 rebounding advantage over the Cardinals.

The Hawks scorched the nets for 52% shooting (17/23) while holding Maquoketa to 30% shooting (12/40).

The third quarter saw the Hawks outscore the Cardinals 13-11 to take a 35-22 lead. It was all West Delaware over the final eight minutes as the Hawks tossed in 17 points while holding the Cardinals to just 4.

Vikings, Wildcats split in Colesburg

The Ed-Co Vikings and the Maquoketa Valley Wildcats squared off in a Tri-Rivers Conference girl/boy double header last Tuesday night in Colesburg.
The Viking girls used some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to hold off the young Wildcats, 60-52.

Ed-Co’s Tracy Sullivan scored her teams final four points from the free throw line to extend a 56-52 Viking lead to the final margin of victory.

For the night Sullivan was six for six from the charity stripe as she tossed in 12 points for the Vikings.

The Vikings Mindy Meyer was the dominate player for Ed-Co as she scored 22 points and pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.

After Ed-Co jumped out to an early 8-2 lead the Wildcats stormed back behind the three point shooting of freshman Jodi Gibbs to take a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Gibbs nailed a pair of three pointers during the first quarter and made five of 11 from behind the arc for the game to score a team high 18 points for the Wildcats.

The second quarter was very closely contested between the two teams.

After Ed-Co took a 26-23 on a Tiffany Dugan field goal Gibbs tied the score at 26-26 with her third three-pointer of the first half.

The Vikings outscored the Wildcats 17-4 and led 48-34 before Gibbs made her fourth three point goal to pull the Cats to within 11-points, 48-37 at the end of the third quarter.

Gibbs ignited a Wildcat fourth quarter rally that saw the Cats cut a 14-point Viking lead, 52-38, to just two points, 52-50 with 3:40 left in the game.

The Wildcats were able to score just two more points as the Vikings posted the eight point victory, 60-52.

“This was a very exciting high school basketball game. I felt overall we played well even though we had some defensive breakdowns. We were able to get the stops we needed late in the game,” commented Viking Coach Roger Wright.

In the boys contest the Wildcats held a 17-12 first quarter lead and were up 32-23 at the half before going on to post a 64-48 win over the host Vikings.

The Vikings kept the game close most of the way despite having their two leading scorers, Ryan Putz and Matt Mescher, spending time on the bench with early foul problems.

Mescher led the Vikings in scoring with 18 points, Putz tallied 12, however, each fouled out of the contest.

For the Wildcats they had three players score in double figures led by Donny Nordmann’s 21 points. Brett Huber and Aaron Jay each tossed in 11 points.

Ed-Co got as close as they were going to be in the second half on a Matt Mescher three-point goal with 2:40 left in the third quarter, 40-36.

The Wildcats pulled away steadily after that to lead 49-36 at the end of the quarter before winning by 16-points, 64-48.

Vikings split with Pirates

The Ed-Co Viking girls defeated the Alburnett Pirates 56-54 last Friday night in Edgewood.

Ed-Co trailed 49-37 after three quarters of action but came out on fire during the fourth quarter to erase the 12-point deficit and win by two points.

“Our defensive intensity really picked up in the fourth quarter, which allowed us to get this come from behind win,” said Coach Roger Wright.

Alburnett led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter and 34-26 at the half.

A 15-11 Pirate scoring advantage in the third quarter forced the Vikings to scramble back for the slim two point victory.

Tiffany Dugan led the Vikings in scoring with 21 points, Mindy Meyer chipped in with 12 points and 19 rebounds. Nikki Lueken was the third Viking to score in double figures with 12 points.

Tiffany Kruse 4, Tracy Sullivan 2, Jackie Lincoln2, and Lora Hunt 2 rounded out the Viking scoring.

Tiffany Kruse dished out a team high 3 assists while Nikki Lueken recorded a team high 2 steals.

The Ed-Co Viking boys had a rough shooting night as they fell to the Pirates, 54-42.

Ed-Co connected on just 13 of 58 shots for 22% shooting from the floor.

Alburnett held an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by four points, 16-12 at the half.

Alburnett stretched its lead to 28-22 by the end of the third quarter before outscoring the Vikings 26-20 over the final eight minutes of action.

Ryan Putz led the Vikings with 16 points, 14 rebounds, nine steals and four assists before fouling out of the game.

Matt Mescher tossed in 12 pints and dished out three assists.

Spenser Smith scored three points had two assists, three steals and eight rebounds in the contest.

Also scoring for the Vikings were Andy Oldfather 2, Kyle Domeyer 3, and Adam Clauson 6.



Cats split two contests
The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat girls rebounded from their loss to Ed-Co to defeat Anamosa 62-44 last Friday night.

The Cats were led in scoring against the Raiders with three girls scoring 12 points, Megan Kramer, Jodi Gibbs and Krista Steger.

For the game the Wildcats shot 44% from the field and 58% from the free throw line.

Sarah Stelken had a three point basket and freshman Jodi Gibbs made two of six shots from behind the arc.

The Cats crashed the boards and hauled down a season high 40 rebounds led by Krista Steger who pulled down 14 boards.

Rachel Huber dished out a team high six assists as the Cats evened their record at 9-9.

Also scoring were Bailey Salow 8, Sarah Stelken 3, Rachel Huber 5, Michelle Tumey 4, and Blake Funke 2.

On Saturday the Cats fell to the Blazers of Dyersville Beckman 60-54.

Jodi Gibbs once again led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, she continued her good three-point shooting making two of five against the Blazers.

Michelle tumey was the only other Wildcat to score in double figures with 10 points.

The Cats made 19 of 50 field goal attempts for 38% shooting from the floor while cashing in on 13 of 20 free throws for 65% shooting from the line.

With the loss to the Blazers the Wildcats season record stands at 9-10 with the regular season drawing to a close.

Also scoring for the Wildcats against Dyersville Beckman were Megan Kramer 8, Bailey Salow 2, Jordan Gibbs 7, Krista Steger 9 and Blake Funke 4.

The Wildcats next game is at Center Point against the Stormin Pointers.
