Hawks put four on medal stand at State Wrestling Tournament
|
Led Class 3A state runner-up Zach McCool at 130-pounds the West Delaware wrestling team landed four wrestlers on the medal stand last Saturday night in Des Moines.
McCool’s state championship match at 130-pounds on Saturday night was the center of attention for all those in attendance.
Zach had the dubious honor of facing off against three-time defending state champion TJ Sebolt of Centerville with Sebolt gunning for his fourth consecutive state title.

Dustin went on to place sixth for the Hawks in the State Tournament at 152-pounds. |
The match was a good one and in the end Sebolt prevailed, 9-3 to became only the 17th wrestler in Iowa history to win four state titles.
Zach, who was rated second behind Sebolt all season long lived up to that lofty ranking by making it to the finals.
In round one Zach pinned Alex Bogue of Battle Creek Ida Grove at the 5:22 mark of their match. On Thursday Zach continued his run to the finals with a win by fall at 1:18 over Dylan Jans of GRNT Reinbeck/North Tama.
In his championship semi-final round he recorded a 4-3 decision over Bryan Sundall of Emmetsburg Armstrong Ringstead to set up his championship match with Sebolt.
Freshman 103-pounder Nathan Vaske came home with a seventh place finish.
Nathan lost a hard fought 5-4 decision to Ryan Hill of Vinton Shellsburg in his first round match.
He bounced in the consolation round later on Wednesday nicely to post a technical fall victory, 15-0, over David Stubblefield of Bishop Heelan Catholic. On Thursday Nathan earned his right to be on the medal stand with a 3-0 decision win over Dylan Rusher of Roland-Story.
Nathan lost his third round consolation match, 5-1 to Tucker Weber of Clear Lake. He rebounded nicely to defeat Matt Mullikin of Sigourney Keota in Saturday afternoons seventh and eighth place match.
Chris Harbaugh made his first appearance at the state wrestling tournament for the Hawks at 140-pounds. Chris wrestled very hard during his two matches at the state tournament, losing in the first round to Tyler Murtaugh of Harlan 9-1. His second match was also a tough match where he lost 7-2 to Kyle Malm of Emmetsburg Armstrong Ringstead.
At 152-pounds the Hawks Dustin Jaeger did not have an easy task in front of him. Dustin won his first match of the tournament, 5-2 over Andy Johnson of Osage to stay on the winners side.
His quarterfinal match was a wild affair against Brooks Kopsa of East Marshall LeGrand. In the end Dustin survived the antics of Kopsa and some close calls by the officials to emerge with an 11-10 win.
In the championship semi-finals Dustin faced eventual 152-pound runner-up Ryan Collins of Glenwood where he lost a hard fought match 9-3.
In his semi-finals consolation match he lost a very close 1-0 decision to Jake Durbin of Gilbert before losing to Kopsa in the fifth, sixth place match.

Nate then won his first consolation match with a 7-5 decision over Chris Finn of GRNT Reinbeck North Tama. He followed that with a big 9-1 decision win over WaMaC Conference opponent Jeff Ohnemus of DeWitt Central.
Nate again faced Barber from Winterset in the consolation semi-finals where he lost by decision, 8-0.
Again Nate bounced back from a defeat to down Jim Weiser of Clarke Osceola 4-2 to advance to the fifth/sixth place match on Saturday afternoon. In that match he came all the way back from a 7-0 deficit to win 9-8 over Brian Schmidt of Gilbert.
