State Dual bound plus five to State
|
The West Delaware wrestling team qualified for the Class 2A State Dual Team Tournament in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 4th with a 41-24 Regional Dual Meet victory over DeWitt Central last Tuesday night in Manchester.
The Hawks owned a 40-30 dual win over the Sabers earlier in the season and were able to improve on that margin of victory with a state berth on the line.
The meet was totally decided until the Hawks Zach McCool won by fall at 130-pounds to give the Hawks a 35-21 lead with just two matches remaining.

The dual started at 145-pounds where the Hawks Tyler Manternach lost an 8-3 decision.
Senior Dustin Jaeger gave the Hawks the lead with a dominating 9-0 major decision at 152.
The 160-pound match between the Hawks Nate Lahr and the Sabers Jeff Ohnemus was not without its controversy. In the end the Sabers Ohnemus escaped with an 8-6 decision to give the Sabers a 6-4 lead.
Senior Jamie Vaske took the mat at 171-pounds for the Hawks and came out on fire. Jamie had dropped a 5-1 decision to the Sabers Sam Schmidt on January 5th. He avenged that loss in outstanding fashion with a huge 9-6 win that put the Hawks back in the lead, 7-6.
It seemed that Vaske’s win lit a fire under the Hawks as the recorded four straight wins to grab a huge 29-6 lead over the Sabers.
Senior Tony Marbach followed Vaske’s win at 171 with a quick first period fall; junior brothers Steve (215) and Paul Broghammer (275) both won by fall to give the Hawks a 25-6 lead.
Freshman Nathan Vaske (103) recorded a 12-2 major decision to put the Hawks up 29-6.
The Sabers picked up wins at the next three weights to pull to within eight points at 29-21. That’s when Zach McCool put the meet away with a pin.
Sophomore Adam Rave then recorded a win by fall for the Hawks to make the score 41-21.
The nights final match saw the Hawks Chris Harbaugh loose a hard fought 7-5 overtime decision to make the final score 41-24.
The Hawks will be making their third appearance in the State Dual Team Tournament in the last four years. Their first in Class 2A since winning the State Dual Team Title in 1991.
The Hawks first round dual will be against Osage (16-5). The winner of that dual will take on the winner of the Spirit Lake Park (21-0) vs. LaPorte City Union (15-4) dual in a semi-final match.
The lower half of the dual tournament pits Emmetsburg (24-3) against Huxley Ballard (18-3) and Glenwood (12-3) against Columbus Junction (22-1).
On Saturday the Hawks took 10 wrestlers to the Class 2A District Meet on the campus of Upper Iowa University in Fayette. On the line was a berth to the State Wrestling Tournament this week in Des Moines.
The Hawks pushed five wrestlers through the district tournament and on to the big show in Des Moines.
And just for good measure they also added the District Team title to their resume for the 2005-06 season.
Making it to Des Moines for the Hawks were Nathan Vaske (103), Zach McCool (130), Chris Harbaugh (140), Dustin Jaeger (152) and Nate Lahr (160).
McCool and Jaeger were the Hawks only two champions. Vaske placed second while Harbaugh and Lahr won their wrestleback matches to make the trip to Des Moines.
At 103-pounds Nathan Vaske faced Austin Berry of MFL who entered the meet with a 29-1 record; his only loss was to Vaske at the Starmont Tournament earlier in the year. Nathan handed Berry his second loss of the season and advanced to the finals where he lost to Sectional Champ Cory Olson of Denver/Tripoli by fall. There was no wrestleback as Berry defeated Joel Thomas of Cresco.
At 130-pounds Zach McCool pinned his way to a District title. He pinned Russell Evans of New Hampton in his first match and followed that up with a pin of Waukon’s Andrew Schulte.
At 140-pounds Chris Harbaugh lost his first match of the day to Jacob Schick of Sumner Fredericksburg, 7-2. He then defeated Andy Endorf of Denver/Tripoli in the consolation round. He earned a wrestleback opportunity when Schick defeated Brody Suddendorf of MFL in the finals.
Chris used a late reversal to record a 4-2 decision over Suddendorf and punch his ticket to the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.
At 152-pounds the Hawks Dustin Jaeger defeated Derek Wicks of Waukon 9-0 in his first match to set up a finals showdown with once beaten Jaydon Mitchell of New Hampton. Dustin dominated Mitchell and recorded a big 9-3 decision win to advance to state.
The fifth Hawk to advance to Des Moines was junior Nate Lahr at 160-pounds. Nate won his first round match 4-0 over Mitch Kriener of Cresco before losing to Mason Berns of Waukon by fall in the finals. He then picked up a big win over WaMaC Conference rival Scott Soukup of Independence to earn a trip to the state tournament.
The Hawks scored 80 team points to capture the team title by seven points over runner-up MFL MarMac. New Hampton was third with 65 points, Crestwood fourth and Independence fifth.
The State Wrestling Tournament gets underway in Des Moines this Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with the Class 3A first round and first round consolations.
The Hawks will first hit the mat with the 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. session which will be the Class 2A first round and first round consolation brackets.

The Grand March will start at 5:30 p.m. with the finals starting at the conclusion of the march. |
Hawk girls end season with a 49-45 loss at Marion |
The West Delaware girls basketball team didn’t quite have enough fire power to over take Marion last Saturday night in a District Tournament game at Marion.

The third quarter ended with the Indians leading the Hawks by a score of 36-31.
