by Ken Boesenberg

The 2006-07 basketball season got underway last Tuesday night for both the West Delaware boys and girls teams.

The Hawks had a girl, boy double header but against different opponents. The girls faced Center Point Urbana while the boys squared off against Monticello.

The girls team got the night started with a 42-25 victory over visiting CPU.

The Hawks scored the first point of the game on a free throw by Katie Wessels and never trailed in the contest.

The Hawks had two double figure scorers, Sam Conrad with 12 points and Jenny Hood with 11.

Nine of Hood’s 11 points came from behind the three-point arc as the Hawks made five three pointers against the Stormin’ Pointers.

Emily Heffernen and Ashley Hood had the other two three-pointers.

Emily Heffernen’s free throw with 3:29 left in the first quarter gave the Hawks an eight point lead, 10-2.

West Delaware did not score again in the first quarter until Ashley Hood hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Hawks a 12-5 lead.

The Hawks Sam Conrad blocks a shot by CPU’s Kolby Mason. Conrad scored a team high 12 points for the Hawks as they defeated the Stormin’ Pointers’ 42-25 last Tuesday night.

The Hawks BJ Hermsen scores two of his game high 31 points during the Hawks 71-59 win over the Panthers last Tuesday night in Manchester.

CPU closed the gap to three points with just over two minutes left in the second quarter but the Hawks came right back with three straight baskets to up the lead to nine points.

Sam Conrad put in back to back short jumpers and Jenny Hood canned a jumper just inside the three-point line to give the Hawks their nine-point lead, 23-14 at the half.

Jenny Hood’s three-point basket at the start of the third quarter gave the Hawks their first double digit lead of the game, 26-14.

CPU would get no closer than 10 points for the remained of the game.

Hawks roll through final round to capture Hawk Invite title
by Ken Boesenberg
The West Delaware wrestling team got the 2006-07 season off to a good start last week.

On Thursday evening they traveled to Waterloo for a season opening dual with Waterloo West.

The two teams were very evenly matched as the final score indicated, 35-35 with each team winning seven matches and recording four falls. West was awarded the dual victory by scoring one technical fall to no technical falls for the Hawks.

The Hawks have a number of young wrestlers in the line up with three freshmen and three sophomores starting.
The meet started at 130 pounds where freshman Chris Ketchum lost a very hard fought match 2-0 in overtime.

The Hawks Brett Yonkovic finishes off top seeded Ian Mitchell of New Hampton to advance to the 119-lb. finals where he defeated Aaron Kapell of Decorah to win his first Hawk Invitational title.
The Hawks ran off four straight wins as Nick Ketchum recorded a major decision (14-3) followed by three consecutive falls by Chris Harbaugh (140), Zach McCool (145) and Adam Rave (152). Those four wins gave the Hawks a 22-3 lead.

West Delaware was able to win just three of the final nine matches; Carl Broghammer 4-3 at 189 lbs.; Steven Broghammer by fall at 215 and Nathan Vaske a 13-5 major decision at 112 lbs.

There wasn’t a lot of time to rehash the dual meet as the Hawks had to prepare themselves for some tough competition at their Hawk Invite on Saturday.

This early season tournament has always provided area wrestling fans with some outstanding matches and very exciting team races. This year was no exception with the likes of New Hampton, Linn-Mar, Decorah and Marion in the field of eight teams.

The tournament would be extremely tight all day long with the Hawks and New Hampton going back and forth for the top spot.

In the end the Hawks would use a string of 11 straight wins in the final round and crown six individual champions to capture first place 214.5 to 211 over New Hampton.

The Hawks placed 12 of their 13 wrestlers in the top five places while New Hampton placed 13 of their 14 wrestlers in the top five spots.

The Hawks are wrestling one man short as they are unable to fill the 103 pound slot. That was a spot where New Hampton claimed an individual title, making the Hawk 3.5 point win even that much more impressive.

Picking up individual titles for the Hawks were Nathan Vaske at 112, Brett Yonkovic at 119, Chris Harbaugh at 140, Zach McCool at 145, Adam Rave at 152 and Steven Broghammer at 215.

Capturing big wins for third place finishes were Chris Ketchum (130), Nick Ketchum (135), Tyler Manternach (160) and Carl Broghammer (189).

Nathan Vaske was the first Hawk to take home the first place medal. Nathan was 3-0 on the day, defeating Kyle Thompson of Marion by fall in his first match; Anthony Hable of Decorah 2-0 in the semi-finals and Wes Shetterly of Linn-Mar 1-0 in the finals at 112 pounds.

The Hawks second individual title of the tournament came at 119 pounds where freshman Brett Yonkovic came from the fifth seeded spot to the top of the medal stand. In winning his three matches on the day Brett defeated Austin Weisinger of Marion by fall in the first round, picked up an 8-6 win over top seeded Ian Mitchell of New Hampton and then defeated second seeded Aaron Kapell of Decorah 6-5 in the finals.

Another freshman, Pat Soppe at 125 pounds pulled out a big 4-3 win over Alex Maltsev of Fairfield to capture fifth place. Pat’s win was the third win in a row for the Hawks in the final placement matches.

The Hawks third freshman in the line up is Chris Ketchum at 130 pounds. Chris won his first match of the day by fall over Greg Civin of Fairfield before losing a tough 9-5 overtime decision to Spencer Jordan of Linn-Mar in the semi-finals. He bounced right back to pin Keegan O’Neil of CR Washington and Greg Civin of Fairfield to take third place.

At 135 pounds, Nick Ketchum was 3-1 on the day with all three wins coming by fall. He pinned Nathan Nissen of Marion in his first match before losing 10-8 in overtime to Zach Garman of Linn-Mar in the semis. He then stuck Kenny Reed of CR Washington and Kevin Downs of Waterloo East to capture third place.

Chris Harbaugh was the top seed at 140 for the Hawks and he showed why as he won two matches by a combined score of 18-1 to take the top spot. he defeated Alex Conway of Marion 15-0 in the semis and Charles Tims of Waterloo East 3-1 in the finals.

Senior Zach McCool is up a couple of weight classes from last year and is proving he is a force to be reckoned with. Zach won the 145 pound title with a pin of mark Katzenburger of Fairfield in the semis and a 14=6 major decision over Keelan Moore of Waterloo East in the finals.

Also up a couple of weight classes is Adam Rave who is competing at 152 this year. Adam picked up a pair of major decisions, 11-2 over Kyle Foreman of Fairfield and 16-5 over Kyle Rogers of Marion to move into the finals. In the finals Adam defeated Ely Ackles of Waterloo East 8-5 giving the Hawks their eighth straight final round match win in a row.

At 160 pound Tyler Manternach bounced back from a first round 16-12 loss to Anthony Thomas of CR Washington to defeat Thomas 12-3 for third place. Between the two matches with Thomas Tyler pinned Clarence Jordan of Waterloo East and Andrew Kapell of Decorah.

At 189 the Hawks Carl Broghammer won his first match of the day, 7-1 over Josh Schilling of New Hampton before falling in the semis to eventual champion Alex Grafft of CR Washington, 16-3. Carl came back to pin Onazi Agbese of Waterloo East and Justin Daniel of Marion to place third.

The Hawks 11th straight finals round victory came at 215 pounds where top seeded senior Steven Broghammer took care of business by pinning his way to the title. He stuck Eric Hackman of New Hampton in the first round, Ben Ogden of CR Washington in the semis and Lucas Keune of Decorah in the finals to become the sixth Hawk champion of the day.

This week the Hawks will host a double dual on Thursday night with Independence and Maquoketa before participating in the Cedar Rapids Extravaganza on Saturday.
