Hawks flatten CR Washington and Dubuque Senior in Dubuque

Coach Jeff Voss and his West Delaware wrestling team traveled to Dubuque Senior last Thursday night for a double dual with the Warriors of Cedar Rapids Washington and the Rams of Dubuque Senior.

Paul would win via fall in this match, giving him two wins on the night; both by fall as the Hawks swept the double dual meet with CR Wash and Senior. Zach wrestled his first varsity competition of the year after setting out with a broken finger for the early part of the season.

It turned out to be a very successful trip as the Hawks swept the double dual by first defeating CR Washington 63-20 before downing host Senior 59-14.

A pair of Broghammers got the night started for the Hawks with Steve (215) and Paul (275) each winning via pins.

Neither team had a 103-pounder but both had a pair of highly ranked wrestlers at 112; Elijah Rivera for the Warriors and Nathan Vaske for the Hawks.

Vaske owned the match from the start and picked up a big 3-0 decision win to give the Hawks a 21-6 lead.

Freshman Brett Yonkovic picked up a fall at 119 as did fellow freshman Chris Ketchum at 130 to give the Hawks a 33-11 advantage.

The Hawks won the next five matches by forfeit to up their lead to 63-11.

Zach Boss made his first varsity appearance of the year up a weight at 171 pounds where he lost by fall. Carl Broghammer (189) lost a hard fought 7-6 decision in the meets last match to make the final score 63-20 in favor of the Hawks.

Against Dubuque Senior the meet started at 275 where Paul Broghammer picked up his second fall of the night to give the Hawks an early 6-0 lead.

After a double forfeit at 103 Nathan Vaske (112) notched win number two of the night with a fall.

The Hawks lost the next two matches, by fall at 125 and a 3-2 decision at 130 to make the score West Delaware 15, Dubuque Senior 14.

The Senior crowd was into the match following their two consecutive victories, but their cheers quickly turned to silence as the Hawks ran off eight straight wins.

In that streak the Hawks recorded two technical falls, five pins and a decision to route the Rams, 59-14.

Nick Ketchum (135) and Chris Harbaugh (140) both recorded technical fall victories, Nick 17-2 and Chris by a score of 17-1.

Zach McCool (145) and Adam Rave (152) both dominated their matches from the opening whistle and recorded falls to up the score to 37-14.

Zach Boss, back at 160-pounds used an aggressive style to dominate his opponent and picked up a big 9-1 major decision win.

Tyler Manternach (171), Carl Broghammer (189) and Steven Broghammer (215) finished off the Rams, all winning by pin to give the Hawks an overwhelming 59-14 victory.

The Hawks are done until after the Christmas break when they will travel to Benton Community on Thursday, January 4 for a double dual with the Blazers of Dyersville Beckman and the host Bobcats of Benton Community.

The West Delaware boys basketball team ran their winning streak to three games with a pair of victories last week.

The Hawks downed Vinton 69-52 last Tuesday night in Manchester.

The Hawks had three double figure scorers in BJ Hermsen with 21 points, Matt Rolfes with 16 and Phil Keppler with 12.

Chris Crawford turned in his best floor game of the season as he dished out a game high 13 assists, had two steals, scored five points, recorded two steals while turning the ball over only twice in a fast paced game.

Crawford is averaging just short of 9 assists per game for the Hawks.

The Hawks had 25 team assists and shot a red hot 70% from two-point range (23 of 33) with Rolfes leading the way making eight of nine shots.

The Hawks took a 20-17 lead at the end of the first quarter as six different players scored for the Hawks.

Vinton took the lead early in the second period on back to back three point baskets.

With Vinton up 25-22 Austin Cole knocked down a long three point basket for the Hawks to tie the game at 25-25. For the rest of the second quarter neither team would lead by more than to points.

Vinton got a basket with 16 seconds remainig before half time to take a one point lead, 31-30 to the locker room.

The Hawks came out ready to go in the second half, putting an 18-6 run on the Vikings to build up an 11-point lead, 48-37 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

Vinton cut the Hawk lead to eight points, 52-44 with the clock winding down. Justin Gideon hit a long three-point shot at the buzzer as the third quarter ended to give the Hawks a double digit lead, 55-44.

The Hawks totally dominated the action over the final eight minutes to win going away by a final score of 69-52.

On Friday night the Hawks hosted the Blazers of Dyersville Beckman in a big WaMaC Conference contest.

The Hawks kept the fine play going as they picked up a nice 12-point victory, 53-41 over the Blazers.
