Hawk girls win two big conference contests

The West Delaware girls basketball team picked up a pair of important WaMaC Conference victories last week.

They started on Monday night with a three-point, 48-45 road win at Maquoketa.

The Hawks got 20 points from Katie Wessels and a 10 point, 10 rebound effort from Emily Heffernen to defeat the Cardinals.

Jenny Hood connected on a key free throw near the end of the game that gave the Hawks a three point lead.

The Cardinals missed a running three point shot at the buzzer letting the Hawks escape with a three-point victory.

On Friday night the Hawks found themselves in a tussle with a young Marion Indian squad in the Hawk gym.

The Hawks trailed 42-28 mid-way through the third quarter and 50-41 during the fourth quarter before rallying for a huge 53-50 win.

Some big inside baskets and the three-point shooting of senior Jenny Hood (4 of 6) keyed the Hawk rally.

Katlyn Heiserman hit two big free throws at the end of the game to give the Hawks their final margin of victory.

Katie Wessels and Jenny Hood led the Hawks in scoring with 21 and 15 points.

On Saturday night the Hawks traveled to Oelwein for their third game of the week.

The Hawks stayed with the Huskies for the first half but ran out of gas and lost their shooting touch during the second half to fall by a final score of 53-36.

Oelwein held a 20-2 scoring advantage from the charity stripe as the Hawks committed 25 fouls to the Huskies 9.

The Hawks have two big conference games this week, at Vinton and at Beckman.

Hawks crown four champs at Starmont Invite Tournament

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team had just one meet this past week, the Starmont Invitational Tournament on Saturday at Starmont.

The Hawks sent eight wrestlers to the finals and crowned four champs but came up just seven and a half points short in the team race, losing to MFL 227.5 to 220.

The Bulldogs claimed titles at 103, 125, 140, 152, and 275 to over take the Hawks who had built a 14 point lead going into the finals.

Winning championships for the Hawks were Nathan Vaske at 112, Nick Ketchum at 135, Zach McCool at 145 and Steven Broghammer at 215.

Four Hawks placed second, Brett Yonkovic at 119, Chris Harbaugh at 140, Adam Rave at 152 and Carl Broghammer at 189.

Paul Broghammer (275) and Tyler Manternach (160) won their last matches of the day to place third.

Zach McCool has his opponent from Postville in a world of hurt during a semi-final match at 145 pounds at the Starmont Invitational Tournament.
At 112 pounds for the Hawks, Nathan Vaske upped his season record to 12-1 with three wins on his way to first place.

Nathan started the tournament with an 18-3 tech fall over Devin Wagner of Oelwein. In the semi-finals he pinned Tyler Holst of Durant at 1:31.

In the finals Nathan met a wrestler that he had beaten in two very close previous matches, Wes Shetterly of Linn Mar. He defeated Shetterly in the championship match at the Hawk Invite and then again in dual meet competitor a week ago at the Cedar Rapids Extravaganza.

Nathan prevailed at Starmont 1-0 for his second tournament title of the year.

The Hawks next champion was at 135 where Nick Ketchum rallied for a 12-2 deficit to win 14-12 in overtime over Mitch Baumgartner of Starmont. Nicks three wins pushed his record to 11-3 on the year.

Nick used eight near fall points in the third and final period to throw the match into overtime where he won with a take down.

On his way to the finals Nick defeated Sean Grennan of Oelwein with a 14-second fall before downing Cameron Costelle of Durant, 19-3 in the semi-finals.

Baumgartner had pinned his way to the finals for the Stars.

The third Hawk champion of the tournament was at 145-pounds where top ranked in Class 3A and undefeated Zach McCool pinned Tony Pickart of Starmont in the third period.

Zach is now 11-0 on the season with his three wins on Saturday.

In his first match McCool won by fall in 58-seconds over Michael Coffelt of Linn Mar before pinning Mitchell Schultz of Postville at 3:22 in his semi-final match.

The fourth and final Hawk champion of the day came at 215-pounds where Steve Broghammer ran his record to 10-2 on the season with two wins.

Steven received a first round bye to advance to the semi-finals. In the semis he pinned Brenden Gilbert of MFL at the 1:22 mark of the first period to advance to the finals.

In the finals he posted a 5-0 decision over Luke goodson of Linn Mar to claim the top spot at 215.

At 119 the Hawks Brett Yonkovic won his first two matches, the first with a first period pin of Mo Al-Yahri of Central City and the second with a 6-5 decision over Taylor Reicks of MFL.

In the finals Brett lost a 6-0 decision to Spencer Jordan of Linn Mar.

At 130 Nick Ketchum lost his first round match to Bradley Westendorf, 9-5 and came all the way back through the back side to battle for third place.

Along the way he defeated Cameron Brandt of Wapsie Valley by fall and Zach Garman of Linn Mar by fall before losing his second match of the day to Westendorf, 4-2.

At 140 the Hawks Chris Harbaugh suffered just his first defeat of the season, against 11 wins, when he lost his finals match, 11-3 to Cody Bachman of MFL.

Chris advanced to the finals with a pin of Matt Pregler of Dubuque Wahlert and a 13-5 major decision over Sam White of Postville.

At 152 the Hawks Adam Rave won his first two matches of the tournament with falls in the first minute of action.

He pinned Danny Clary of Central City in his first match and Dan Cunningham of Durant in his semi-final match.

Adam lost a 5-1 decision to Andrew Rodas of MFL in the finals. His record now stands at 9-4 on the year.

After winning his first match at 160 by fall over Dan Holz of Dubuque Wahlert, Tyler lost a 10-2 decision to Chris Finn of GRNT in the semi-finals.

He then received an injury default victory over CJ Johanns of Starmont before downing Chris Dibble of Postville 10-2 for third place.

At 189-pounds Carl Broghammer picked up a pair of wins by fall before losing, 9-4 to Mitch Blythe of Central City in the finals.
