Hawk wrestlers take third at CR Extravaganza

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team started the week at home with a tough WaMaC Conference double dual meet against Maquoketa and Independence last Thursday night.
The Hawks defeated Maquoketa 51-18, before falling to a very good Independence Mustang squad, 34-19.
Against Maquoketa the dual started at 171 pounds where Hawk sophomore Nick Ronnebaum lost a hard fought 3-0 decision.
The next four weights were all forfeits, the Hawks receiving three at 189, 215 and 285 while the Cardinals got a forfeit from the Hawks at 103 to make the score 18-9.
Nathan Vaske won by fall at 112-pounds to give the Hawks a 24-9 lead.
West Delaware lost at 119 and 125 before winning the last six matches to claim the 51-18 victory.
Winning for the Hawks were Chris Ketchum (130), 6-2; Nick Ketchum (135), 4-2; Chris Harbaugh (140), by fall; Zach McCool (145), by fall; Adam Rave (152), by fall; and Tyler Manternach (160), 10-6.
Against the Mustangs of Independence the Hawks were able to win just five matches as they fell 34-19.

Nick Ketchum (135) won by fall; Chris Harbaugh (140) recorded a 10-2 major decision and Zach McCool wrestling up a weight at 152 picked up a 9-4 decision.
Three other matches were very close with Steve Broghammer (215) losing in overtime. Brett Yonkovic (119) and Adam Rave (145) both lost one point decisions.
On Saturday the Hawks traveled to Cedar Rapids for one of the best dual meets in the state, the CR Extravaganza which boasted 50 plus individually ranked wrestlers and 8 ranked Class 3A teams.
The Hawks did a fine job as they tied their highest finish ever, placing third.
They started the day with a 48-15 win over the Comets of Charles City in the opening round, winning 11 of the 14 matches.
Picking up wins for the Hawks against Charles City were Carl Broghammer (189), 9-4; Steve Broghammer (215), by fall; Paul Broghammer (285), 2-1; Nathan Vaske (112) and Brett Yonkovic (119) by forfeit; Chris Ketchum (130), 4-1; Nick Ketchum (135), 4-2; Chris Harbaugh (140), 12-3; Adam Rave (145), 20-5; Nick McCool (152), 5-4; and Tyler Manternach (160) by forfeit.
In the quarterfinals the Hawks squared off against a team that has always been very competitive in Class 3A, the Little Hawks of Iowa City High.
The Hawks fell behind early 9-0 as they lost at 171 and 189. At 215 Steve Broghammer got the Hawks on the board with a third period pin to make the score 9-6.
At heavyweight the Hawks Paul Broghammer lost 10-1 followed by a Hawk forfeit at 103 to give City High a 19-6 lead.
From there on out the meet belonged to the Hawks as they won seven of the last nine matches to defeat City High 43-28.
At 112-pounds, Nathan Vaske started a string of four straight Hawk wins by pinning his opponent in the third period. Brett Yonkovic (119) followed with a 7-2 decision to cut the City High lead to just four points, 19-15.
Pat Soppe (125) gave the Hawks the lead for good when he came out of a scramble to pin his opponent in the second period. Chris Ketchum (130) followed with a fall and the Hawks were on their way to the semi-finals and no worse than a fourth place finish.
Rounding out the Hawks wins were Chris Harbaugh (140), 9-1; Zach McCool (145), by fall; and Tyler Manternach (160) by fall.
In the semi-finals the Hawks faced the second ranked in Class 3A, Go-Hawks of Waverly Shell Rock where the were defeated 53-21.
Winning matches against the Go-Hawks were Zach McCool, Chris Harbaugh, Carl Broghammer and Tyler Manternach.
The Hawks were able to bounce right back as they squared off against Linn-Mar for the third/fourth place match.
Against the Lions the Hawks trailed 20-9 through the first seven matches having won three decisions (Steve Broghammer 2-0, Nathan Vaske 3-1 in overtime, and Brett Yonkovic 4-1).
Nick Ketchum at 135 got the Hawks back on track with an 18-4 major decision that sparked a West Delaware rally that ended with sophomore Carl Broghammers second period pin to give the Hawks a huge 34-26 come from behind victory.
Following Ketchum’s win at 135, Chris Harbaugh and Zach McCool wrapped up undefeated days with a pair of wins. Harbaugh won 6-2 and McCool 11-4, to pull the Hawks to within a point of the Lions, 20-19.
Adam Rave gave the Hawks the lead, 25-20 with a first period pin.
The Hawks forfeited at 160 to trail by a point, 26-25, that moved Tyler Manternach up to 171 where he responded with a 6-2 decision win to give the Hawks a slim two point lead, 28-26.
That’s when Carl Broghammer sealed the deal for the Hawks with his big second period fall.
This week the Hawks will hit the mat, competition wise just once, at the Starmont Tournament on Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m. |

West Delaware boys, girls open WaMaC play

The West Delaware boys and girls got the WaMaC Conference season under way last week with a pair of conference games.
On Tuesday night the boys hosted Waterloo Columbus while the girls were in Waterloo to face the Sailors.
Neither team fared very well as the boys went down to defeat 61-51 while the girls were losing in Waterloo, 54-36.
The Hawk boys stayed with the Sailors during the first quarter as the quarter ended in a 9-9. BJ Hermsen had all of the Hawks nine points during that first quarter.
Columbus outscored the Hawks 20-11 during the second period to take a nine point advantage into the locker room at the half, 29-20.
The Hawks made a big run at the Sailors during the third quarter as they pulled to within two points, 34-32 on a BJ Hermsen basket with 3:30 left in the period.
Hermsen’s basket capped off a seven point run for the Hawks after trailing 34-25. Matt Rolfes scored on a short jumper followed by a three-point basket by Austin Cole to get the Hawks back in the game.
In the end it came down to offensive rebounding by Columbus as they had 17 offensive rebounds and were able to score on eight of them.
The Hawks were led in scoring by BJ Hermsen with 25 points, Matt Rolfes was next with seven.

The Hawk girls had a tough shooting night in Waterloo as they made just 16 of 55 shots, including one of 14 from three-point range as they fell to the Sailors, 54-36.
Sam Conrad and Katie Wessels led the Hawks in scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Wessels also recorded 8 steals for the Hawks while teammate Emily Heffernen pulled down a game high 14 rebounds.
The Hawks trailed the Sailors 14-11 at the end of the first quarter but were outscored 28-11 during the second and third quarters to trail by 20 points heading into the fourth quarter.

On Friday night while the girls were hosting the Mustangs of Independence the boys were on the road for their game with the Mustangs.
Despite putting three players in double figure scoring, led by BJ Hermsen’s 24 points the Hawks could not overcome the hot shooting Mustangs as they fell in Independence, 72-64.
The Hawks held a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and trailed by just a single point, 35-34 at the half.
The Mustangs were able to convert their free throws towards the end of the game to pull away from a slim three point lead late to win by eight points.
The loss dropped the Hawks to 0-2 in the WaMaC Conference and 1-2 overall.

The West Delaware girls were able to come back from a rather sluggish start that saw them trail by a point, 27-26 at the half to defeat the Independence Mustangs 56-42 in Manchester last Friday night.
The Hawks erupted for 23 points in the third quarter as they got their inside game going with Katie Wessels scoring on four straight possessions for the Hawks.
The Hawks held a 49-36 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Katie Wessels topped all Hawk scorers with 18 points on 9 for 11 shooting from the field while Ashley Hood chipped in with 15 points including three of six from three point range.
Jenny Hood nailed two of three three point shots as the Hawks recovered from their poor shooting night in Waterloo to scorch the nets at a 60% clip against the Mustangs.
The Hawks continue to struggle from the foul line as they made just 9 of 20 free throws.
The Hawk defense got better as the game went along. After giving up 27 points in the first half the Hawks turned up the heat and limited the Mustangs to just 15 second half points.
