MV alum honored by U of I
|
John Streif, a 1966 graduate of Maquoketa Valley High School, is one of 14 staff members at the University of Iowa who will receive one of three annual staff awards for excellence presented by UI Staff Council.
Streif, the assistant athletic trainer and travel coordinator for the U of I Department of Athletics, will receive the David J. Skorton Staff Excellence Award for Public Service, which is given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions and have shown “exceptional imagination and dedication to improving the university community.”
Service must include activities of high quality in staff governance, committee work, policy improvement, program creation, etc. and must be outside the normal job responsibilities. Streif will be recognized at a university event this fall and will receive $500 and a commemorative gift.
“It’s a great honor for me, and I appreciate my staff and the people who put me up for the award. I know anything with David Skorton’s name on it means a lot,” Streif said of the award named for the former University of Iowa President. “I’m glad to represent myself and the entire staff. He was a special leader for all students and staff here.”
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Streif still live in Manchester.
“I came here (the University of Iowa) to school in 1966 and never left, which is a phenomenal feat and speaks of the kind of people we have here,” Streif explained. “My family has been so supportive over the years. With roots in the Manchester area – the teachers, counselors and coaches there allowed me to have this chance to be in the position I’m in today.”
Also receiving the Skorton Award will be Margaret Jesse, director of Stead Technology Services Group in the Henry B. Tippie College of Business. |
