West Delaware girls fall one game short
by Ken Boesenberg

The record setting season for the West Delaware girls softball team came to an end at the hands of Cedar Rapids Xavier, 3-1, last Monday night in Manchester.

The Hawks and the Saints hooked up in one of the better softball games of the season on Sill Field.

It all came down to just one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fourth inning when Xavier got a three run home run to put the only runs of the night on the board.

The Hawks played a flawless game with no fielding errors and no strikeouts against Saint pitching.

West Delaware shortstop, Katlyn Heiserman attempts to make a play as a Cedar Rapids Xavier base runner successfully steals second base.
The Hawks scored their lone run of the game on a Sara Hermsen sacrifice fly to left field that scored Ashley Hood.

Hood was the Hawks leading hitter in the game with two hits in three trips to the plate.

Senior Megan Rolfes tossed the first four innings for the Hawks with junior Katie Murphy coming in in the fifth and finishing the game for West Delaware.

Katlyn Heiserman and Lindsey McDowell each had a hit for the Hawks in the game.

The loss ended the Hawks season with a school record 46 wins against just seven losses.

The Hawks Sara Hermsen hit this sacrifice fly to center field to score Ashley Hood (#22) from third base for the Hawks only run during their 3-1 Regional Final loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier last week in Manchester.
The seven losses came by a total of just 10 runs with no loss being by more that two runs.

For the season the Hawks outscored their opponents 309 to 77 and at one stretch of the season ran off 29 straight wins to post a record of 31-2.

As with the boys baseball team, most everyone will be back for the 2007 season.

Two starters, Emily Prinsen and Megan Rolfes will be lost to graduation. Both played huge parts in the Hawks winning their school record 46 games.

That will be a record that, unless they top it next season, will last maybe forever as starting in 2008 the girls softball programs will be limited to 40 regular season games. Add the six state tournament games an you have just 46 total games to play.
