Benton Community edges West Delaware in girls Early Bird

A dozen teams descended on the West Delaware track last Tuesday night to participate in the West Delaware Early Bird Girls Track Meet.
The weather conditions, as they often are early in the season, were not ideal but they were far from the worst that will be seen during the early outdoor season.
The Bobcats of Benton Community scored points in all 19 events to edge out the host Hawks of West Delaware, 129 to 128, to capture the team title.
The Hawks put points on the board in 15 of the 19 events to rack up their runner-up 128 points.
The Hawks had three individual champions and three relay champions.
Capturing individual titles were Anna Reilly in the 1500-meter run (5:29.0), Robbie Sedain in the 400-meter hurdles (1:11.4), and Cristen Dudak in the 400-meter dash (1:03.8).
Relay teams taking first place were the shuttle hurdle (1:07.7), 4 x 800 (10:21.8), and the 4 x 400-meter relay team (4:19.0).
The Hawks were scheduled to run in the Dubuque Hempstead Early Bird last Friday at Dubuque Senior but the meet was canceled due to inclement weather.

West Delaware boys compete at Washington Relays |
Last Thursday night the Hawks made the long journey to Washington to compete in one of the better early boys track meets around, the Washington Relays.
The weather decided not to cooperate, forcing the meet to be completed on Friday night. Because of the long trip the Hawks did not make the return trip on Friday.
However, through the 11 events that were contested on Thursday evening the Hawks were in a first place tie with Mid Prairie, each team having scored 57 points.
