West Delaware boys capture Hawk Early Bird Track Title

The West Delaware boys track team hosted their West Delaware Hawk Early Bird Track Meet last Monday night in Manchester.

The Hawks scored 108 team points, 41 more than second place finisher Central Elkader.

The Maquoketa Valley Wildcats were third with 45 points while Clayton Ridge placed fourth with 34 team points.

All the competitor fought a strong wind that lasted from the beginning to the end of the meet.

The Maquoketa Valley Wildcats had a pair of meet champions in Cody Recker, 19’ 10 1/2” in the long jump and Neal Johnson with a 53.38 first place effort in the 400-meter dash.

On Friday night the Hawks traveled to Tipton for the Tiger Relays, again running in weather that was much more suited for Friday Night Lights than track. The Hawks did a fine job considering that some teams left the competition that did not get over until 10:20 p.m. as they placed in a tie for seventh place.

Hawks top Raiders, 6-1, in Anamosa
The West Delaware girls soccer team used some very good defense and took advantage of a number of scoring opportunities on offense to defeat the Anamosa Raiders 6-1 last Thursday night in Anamosa.

Hawk senior Megan Wessels got the Hawks on the board first with a goal at the 16:00 mark of the first half.

For the next 12 minutes the Hawks played mostly in the Raider defensive zone. Kayla Vaske scored at the 4:34 mark of the first half to up the Hawks lead to 2-0. She scored her second goal of the first half just three minutes later to give the Hawks a 3-0 half time lead.

The second half was much like the first with the Hawks dominating play throughout.

Alaina Davis and Emily Heffernen gave the Hawks a 5-1 lead.

Vaske then scored her third goal of the game with 5:08 remaining to give the Hawks an impressive 6-1 victory over the Raiders.
