West Delaware vs. Decorah
Senior kicker, Justin Krogmann booted a 42-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining in the game to give the Hawks a thrilling 29-27 come from behind victory over a very good Decorah Viking football team last night in the UNI-Dome. Krogmann’s kick capped a seven-play drive that started with 1:19 left on the clock from the Hawk 22-yard line. The Hawks were aided by a pair of Decorah penalties during the drive, one for holding and the other from jumping off-sides on after the Hawks had lined up for a 47-yard field goal try. The five yard penalty proved to be more than enough as Krogmann’s kick sailed easily over the crossbar. The win was the 11th straight for the Hawks and earned them a date with 8-3 Williamsburg in the Class 3A Semi-finals on Monday, November 14th in the UNI-Dome.

“This was just an awesome game fellas, you played hard right to the end and never gave up for one second.
Awesome is the only way to describe it,” commented Coach Winkowitsch during the break down huddle following the game.

Statistically the Hawks were out-gained in total yardage, but the only real statistic that matters in the end is the score when the final buzzer sounds.....29-27.

Rob Houghtlin has nothing on Justin Krogmann
Brian Cook
I've played in, covered and just plain watched a lot of football games over the years, but I'd be hard pressed to come up with many that were more memorable than Tuesday night's, 29-27, victory over the Decorah Vikings in the UNI-Dome.

The determination and effort exhibited by the Hawks in securing the win is something that will be talked about by West Delaware fans for years to come. No matter how this season ends for the Hawks, that thrilling victory over Decorah will be looked on as something special.

I would bet that in the year 2031, when the West Delaware Class of 2006 gets together for its 25-year reunion, that sometime the conversation among many will turn to the night Justin Krogmann nailed that 42-yard field goal to win one of the greatest high school football games ever played.

The only thing I can compare it to is Rob Hughtlin's famous field goal in 1985 that allowed No. 1 ranked Iowa to defeat No. 2 ranked Michigan in the twilight at Kinnick Stadium. What the West Delaware Hawks accomplished Tuesday night seems even more dramatic than that famous moment in Hawkeye lore 20 years earlier.

First of all, Iowa would have continued playing had they lost that day. As a matter of fact Iowa dropped two games after that day at Ohio State and in the Rose Bowl. If West Delaware doesn't pull off that finish, Coach Winkowitsch and company are getting their trophy and heading home for the season.

Second, Krogmann's field goal was a lot longer. What was Houghtlin's kick? Something like 29 yards. Krogmann split the uprights from 42 yards out after Decorah had jumped offside to move the Hawks five yards closer. But I think the kick would have been good from 52 yards. I'm just glad we didn't have to find out.

Adding to the magic of the moment for me was the fact it was my little girl's first live football game. Though she is too young to grasp the situation, Riley can claim she was there, because I doubt she will ever see a better game.

Go Hawks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Hampton answered the initial Hawk score with a 70-yard, 10-play drive to pull to within one point at 7-6 on 10-yard pass from Dylan Boos to Gerry Brusart with 2:14 left in the quarter.

West Delaware upped its lead to 13-6 just one minute into the second quarter when quarterback BJ Hermsen connected with Zach McCool on a 45-yard scoring strike. McCool made the catch and broke away from a New Hampton would be tackler before racing the final 35 yards to pay dirt.

The Hawks forced New Hampton to go three and out on their next possession.

The Hawks took over the ball on their won 44 following the New Hampton punt.

After five straight rushing plays by Alex Boom and Tony Brown and an incomplete pass the Hawks found themselves facing a fourth and four at the New Hampton 25. Senior kicker, Justin Krogmann was called upon to attempt a 42-yard field goal. Krogmann’s kick just cleared the uprights giving the Hawks a 16-6 lead with 5:56 left in the first half.

New Hampton started their next drive at their own 20 when Krogmann boomed his kick-off deep into the Chickasaw endzone preventing a run back.

The Hawks forced a New Hampton fumble that was recovered by Tyler Jackson at the New Hampton 38 yard line.

On the Hawks first play following the fumble recovery BJ Hermsen threw a picture perfect pass down the left side line the was caught right in stride by Tyler Jackson for the Hawks third touchdown of the first half.

Following Justin Krogmann’s successful PAT the Hawks held a 23-6 lead with 4:11 left in the second quarter.

New Hampton again answered the Hawk score with one of their own on a 10-yard run by Bobby Schwickerath. The extra point attempt was blocked leaving the score 23-12 in favor of the Hawks with 1:53 to go before halftime.

Following the kick off the Hawks moved down the field to the New Hampton 15-yard line on the strength of a 31-yard run by Alex Boom and a 26-yard pass from Hermsen to Jett MacTaggert.

The Hawks were unable to score, leaving West Delaware holding a 23-12 lead at the half.

New Hampton capitalized on a West Delaware fumble to score the first points of the second half and cut the Hawk lead to 23-18 with 5:00 left in the third quarter.

Zach McCool returned the kick off 34yards to the Chickasaw 49.

A Hermsen to Austin Cole pass moved the Hawks to the New Hampton 38. Three running plays gave the Hawks a first down at the 25 with just over three minutes to go in the quarter.

Alex Boom then ran for four yards and caught a third and six pass from Hermsen good for seven yards and first down at the 14. Following a three yard pick up by Boom, Chris Harbaugh made a diving catch of a BJ Hermsen pass at the Chickasaw three-yard line to give the Hawks a first and goal. On the very next play Tony Brown powered into the endzone to up the Hawk lead to 29-18.

Hermsen connected with Zach McCool for the 2-point conversion for the Hawks final points of the game and a 31-18 lead.

Neither team would score in the final quarter.

“This was a great win for our football team,” commented Coach Winkowitsch. “Offensively did some very nice things and on defense we came up with some good stops against a quality opponent.”

The Hawks Alex Boom moved into first place on the all-time West Delaware rushing list. With his 146-yard effort against New Hampton Boom now has 2132 career rushing yards.

As a team the 2005 team is now the second best total offensive team in school history with 3675 yards, 2536 rushing and 1139 passing. The top offensive team in school history was the 1993 team that rolled up 5099 total yards in 13 games.

Regina tops Starmont 14-0

KEN BOESENBERG/Press Starmont runningback Derick Sargent runs around left end during the Stars 14-0 loss to Iowa City Regina last Wednesday night in Arlington. The Stars ended the season with a fine 9-1 record and were ranked third in Class 1A.

The play-off run ended for the Starmont Stars last Wednesday night as they were defeated by Iowa City Regina 14-0 in Arlington.

Starmont entered the game as the third ranked team in Class 1A while the Regals came in ranked fourth.

It was the kind of game you would expect from a pair of highly ranked teams.

Regina was able to contain a very potent Starmont offense and the Starmont defense did a more than adequate job of containing a very good Regal offense.

In the end Iowa City used a ball control game during the fourth quarter to score the games only touchdowns and advance on with a slim 14-0 win.

The Stars were led by Derick Sargent who rushed 29 times for a game high 120 yards. Jason Klett picked up 28 yards on just six carries for the Stars.

Ryan Murphy led Regina in rushing with 67 yards on 15 carries while teammate Mike O’Connell ran 13 times for 49 yards and both Iowa City touchdowns.

The Stars end their season with an outstanding record of 9-1.

Vikes fall to Lions 46-25
The Ed-Co Vikings saw their magical season come to an end last Wednesday night as they lost to the fifth ranked in Class A Lisbon Lions, 46-25.

Ed-Co got on the board first with 10-minutes left in the first quarter when Lance Lake scored from three yards out. The opening possession touchdown was set up by Chase Forkenbrock’s 62-yards kick off return and a 26-yard pass from Ryan Putz to Spenser Smith.

Lisbon answered with a pair of first quarter scores and 2-point conversions to lead 16-6 late in the first quarter.

However, Ed-Co’s Ryan Putz connected with Spenser Smith on the last play of the first quarter to make the score 16-12 in favor of the Lions.

Lisbon built their lead to 32-12 by halftime.

The Vikings scored on their first possession of the second half when Ryan Putz connected with Brian Daker on a pretty 56-yard scoring pass.

The Vikings got their last score of the night on a Lance Lake one-yard run. That touchdown was set up by a pair of Ryan Putz pass completions, one to Brian Daker for 45 yards and the other to Lance Lake good for 30 yards.

In the end the Lions offense just had too many shells in the chamber for the Viking defense.

Ed-Co ended their season with a very fine 8-2 record, the only two losses came at the hands of what voters see as the fifth best Class A team in the state.

Offensively the Vikings were led by Ryan Putz who completed 8 of 18 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Vikings were led by Spenser Smith with 4 tackles, 2 assists and 2 interceptions; Lance Lake added 7 tackles, 6 assists and and interception. Gus Mormann had 6 tackles and 14 assists; Tyler Hackbarth, Eric Ausborn, and Kraig Steger each had 3 tackles and 6 assists.

The eight wins for the Vikings were the most in school history.
