athletes honored by Iowa Newspaper Association |
The Iowa Newspaper Association released their All-State Football Teams last week.
A number of area athletes were named to their respective classes all-state teams
for their accomplishments on the gridiron during the 2005 season.
Locally
the Hawks of West Delaware had four players honored. Alex Boom, Tony Brown and
Tony Marbach were tabbed as first team all-state while Nate Allison landed a third
team spot.
Chase Forkenbrock and Spenser Smith of Ed-Co were a first team
picks in Class A for the Vikings while the Maquoketa Valley Wildcats Donny Nordmann
was a third team pick in Class 2A.
In Class 1A Starmonts Derick Sargent
and David Trumblee were first team picks while teammates Reed Schlee and Jared
Tucker were third team selections.

fall in opener to Hempstead, 58-53 |
The West Delaware girls basketball team opened the 2005-06 season on the road
at Dubuque Hempstead last Saturday night.
The Mustangs defeated the Hawks
58-53 in a closely fought contest.
The Hawks got off to a bit of a slow
start as they found themselves down by 13 points, 23-10 with four minutes left
in the second quarter.
However, they were able to make a good run at the
Mustangs over the final four minutes of the first half to trail by just three
points, 24-21 at the half.
The second half was one of runs by both teams.
The Hawks led by as many as seven points during the second half and trailed by
no more than three until the end of the game.
In the end the Mustangs
proved to be too strong at the free throw line as they hit some clutch shots to
finish out the game.
The Hawks had three players score in double figures
led by Megan Rolfes with 14 points. Katie Wessels tossed in 13 and Ashley Hood
chipped in with 10.
Hood was the Hawks leader in assists with nine while
Kathryn Heiar had five steals.
The Hawks traveled to CPU last night (Monday)
and will host a highly touted Waterloo Sailor Columbus squad at home on Friday
night.

girls start season 1-2 |
The Ed-Co Viking girls basketball team defeated Starmont 58-25 last Tuesday before
dropping a pair of games at the Postville Tournament last Friday and Saturday.
Against the Stars the Vikings shot out to a 21-3 lead at the end of the first
quarter and led 35-14 before going on the post the 33-point victory over the Stars.
Tiffany Dugan led the Vikings in scoring with 13 points.
On Friday night
the Vikings traveled to Postville to take on the Postville Pirates in a first
round tournament game.
In the end the Vikings could not over come a 14-point
deficit during the early going of the fourth quarter as they fell to the Pirates
63-54.
Ed-Co led 10-6 mid way through the first quarter before the Pirates
went on a 13-4 run to close out the period and hold a five point lead at 19-14.
The Vikings were able to tie the score at 36-36 on a Tiffany Dugan three-point
play with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Postville started the fourth quarter
with a 10-0 run to build a 14-point lead.
Postville put the game away
at the free throw line during the closing minutes of the contest to record the
nine point victory over the Vikings.
On Saturday night the Vikings faced
St. Ansgar in the consolation side of the four team tournament. St. Ansgar
jumped out to a 22-9 first quarter lead and steadily pulled away for a 59-36 victory
over the Vikings.
Sara Elsbury was the Vikings leading scorer with 11
points followed by Tiffany Dugan with seven.
