Chickasaws edge Hawks for Hawk Invitational title

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team hit the mat for the first time last Saturday as they hosted their annual Hawk Invitational in Manchester.

The Hawks made up a huge amount of ground during the finals as they won nine of their 11 placement matches to finish just 8.5 points behind team champion New Hampton.

With the Hawks having open weights at 112 and 130 the second place finish was a real credit to the competing wrestlers.

After the first round the Hawks lost 140-pound junior Chris Harbaugh to injury, leaving them with just 11 wrestlers.

New Hampton tallied 198 team points with four wrestlers placing first and three wrestlers placing second.

The Hawks on the other hand sent five wrestlers to the finals and all five came home with individual championships.

Freshman Nathan Vaske got the Hawks started in the finals with a 4-2 overtime win over junior Wes Shetterly of Linn Mar. The two were tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation before Vaske scored the winning take down midway through the one minute overtime period. Vaske advanced to the finals with a first round 35-second pin of Waterloo East’s Larry Gaston before defeating Craig Mai of New Hampton 2-1 in the semi-finals.

The Hawks second champion came at 135 with junior Zach McCool. McCool pinned senior Joey Swanson of Marion at 1:42 to claim the title. Zach drew a first round bye before pinning Michael Coffelt of Linn Mar in a minute and 29 seconds of their semi-finals match.

Champion number three for the Hawks came at 160 with senior Dustin Jaeger as he won by technical fall, 16-0, over Adam Schilling of New Hampton. Jaeger had advanced to the finals on the strength of two pins. He pinned Brandon Anderson of Decorah in 1:08 in his first round match before recording a fall over Tyler Hilleshiem of Marion at 2:57 in the semi-finals.

Senior Tony Marbach rung up championship number four for the Hawks with a 4-2 decision over Bobby Kuennen of Decorah. Tony had defeated Alex Grafft of Cedar Rapids Washington 8-3 in the semi-finals after receiving a first round bye.

The Hawks fifth and final individual champion was crowned at 215 pounds when junior Steven Broghammer pinned Andy Jackman of Linn Mar at the the 5:00 minute mark of their title bout. After receiving a first round bye Steven recorded a 9-1 major decision over Brad Robison of Cedar Rapids Washington to advance to the championship match.

Also placing for the Hawks were Jason Lux, 4th, at 119-pounds; Nick Ketchum, 4th, at 125-pounds; Chris Harbaugh, 6th, at 140-pounds; Adam Rave, 5th, at 145-pounds; Tyler manternach, 5th, at 152-pounds; Nate Lahr, 3rd, at 171-pounds and Paul Broghammer, 3rd, at 275-pounds.

Hawk girls fall to Center Point-Urbana, Waterloo Columbus

The West Delaware Hawk girls basketball team had a tough week last week as they dropped a pair of games.

On Tuesday night the Hawks traveled to Center Point to take on a much improved Pointer squad where they were defeated 48-42.

The Hawks got down early, trailing 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 28-17 at the half. First half fouls plagued the Hawks as they were whistled for 11 fouls during the first half, eight of those during the first quarter.

Megan Rolfes pulled the Hawks to within four points, 31-27 with 1:34 left in the third quarter. CPU scored the final four points of the period to lead 35-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the end the Pointers converted six free throws during the games final minute and a half to pull out the victory.

The Hawks were led in scoring by Katie Wessels with 12 points while Megan Rolfes tossed in 10.

On Friday night the Hawks opened up the WaMaC Conference season by hosting the Sailors of Waterloo Columbus.

The Hawks played the Sailors tough until the end of the third quarter before falling in their home opener 51-44.

The Hawks rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to take a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks broke a 12-12 tie to take their largest lead of the game, 17-12 on a three-point basket by Ashley Hood and a driving lay-up by Samantha Hahn with 3:40 left in the first half.

The Hawks were able to hold on to the lead as they entered the locker room at the half up 21-20.

With the Hawks leading 25-23 with 3:02 left in the third quarter Columbus went on a 6-2 run to take a 29-27 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

The game became a free throw shooting contest over the final three and a half minutes with a total of 18 free throws being made over that time.

The Hawks leading scorer, Katie Wessels canned a pair of three-point shots during the final 20 second of action to keep the Hawks close.

Wessels led the Hawks with 14 points, followed by Samantha Hahn with nine.

MV girls top Lynx, fall at Sumner
The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat girls basketball team got the 2005-06 season underway with a pair of games last week.

The Cats started off with a 53-47 win over North Linn on Tuesday night before falling to Sumner-Fredericksburg, 51-48 on Friday night.

Against the Lynx the Cats held a 13-12 first quarter lead only to see North Linn come back and take a one-point lead at the half, 23-22.

Maquoketa Valley used a 19-15 third quarter scoring advantage to take a 41-38 lead into the fourth quarter before winning by a final margin of 53-47.

The Cats were led in scoring by Bailey Salow and Jodi Gibbs, each with 10 points. Megan Kramer had a good floor game with 7 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals for the Cats.

“This was our first game of the season and it looked like it,” commented Coach Tom Pestka.

On Friday night the Cats were on the road for a non-conference contest against Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The game was a close one throughout with the Cats holding an 18-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and Sumner holding a one-point advantage, 32-31 at the half.

The game was knotted at 43-43 at the end of the third quarter before Sumner outscored the Cats 8-5 during the final eight minutes to pull out the three-point victory.

“We shot the ball very well from both the floor (52%) and the free throw line (80%) but we just couldn’t get enough free throws,” stated Coach Pestka.

For the game the Cats made four of five charity tosses while Sumner cashed in on 14 of 20 free throws.

The Cats had three players score in double figures led by Megan Kramer with 13 points. Sarah Stelken and Jodi Gibbs each tossed in 10 points.

Kramer led the Cats with five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Wildcat boys open with win
Donny Nordmann and Casey Lechtenberg combined for 37 of the Wildcats 56 points in their 56-26 win over Oelwein last week.

Nordmann tossed in 25 points while Lechtenberg tallied 12.

The Cats held a three-point lead, 14-11 at the end of the first quarter before limiting the Huskies to just five points in each of the last three quarters of the game.

Over the final 24 minutes of the contest the Cats outscored the Huskies 42-15 to cruise to the easy 30-point win.

Viking girls fall to Panthers
The Ed-Co girls rallied from a four point first quarter deficit to take a 26-20 half time lead at Monticello last Friday night before falling to the Panthers 53-49.

The Panthers cut the Viking half time lead to just one point, 36-35 by the end of the third quarter before outscoring the Vikes 18-13 over the final eight minutes of the contest.

Mindy Meyer scored 21 and Nikki Lueken 12 to lead the Vikings in scoring.

“I was pleased with our effort in this game, but we continue to make mistakes which really hurt us. Our defensive intensity was much improved over our previous games,” commented Coach Roger Wright.

Ed-Co boys fall at Central
The Ed-Co Viking boys basketball team tipped off the 2005-06 season with a hard fought 48-45 loss to Central Elkader.

The Vikings held a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before Central tied the game at 23-23 by half time.

Both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter to leave the score knotted at 38-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

Central was able to outscore the Vikings 10-7 over the final eight minutes to eek out the three-point victory.

Sophomore Matt Mescher led the Vikings in scoring with 20 points on 7 for 16 shooting from the floor while making all four of his free throws.

Ryan Putz chipped in with 12 points and Brian Daker nine.

Putz was the Vikes leading rebounder with 11 boards.
