West
Delaware boys top Maquoketa, up record to 4-1 |
West Delawares Austin Cole drilled a three-point basket with just under
10 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Hawks a 50-48 win over visiting Maquoketa
last Tuesday night.
Eric Crawfords three ball with 7:15 left in
the first quarter gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead, one they would not relinquish until
midway through the fourth quarter.
Brett Manternach scored the Hawks next
five points to put West Delaware up 8-2. Manternach and BJ Hermsen closed out
the first quarter with back-to-back baskets to give the Hawks a 10-point lead,
16-6.
The Hawks built their largest lead of the game at the start of the
second quarter, 20-6, when Tony Brown and Manternach each hit short jumpers. |  KEN

Delaware senior Brett Manternach goes up over Maquoketas Luke Patterson
for two of his 13-points during the Hawks thrilling 50-48 win over the Cardinals
in Manchester last Tuesday night.
| The
Hawks controlled the tempo of the second quarter and took an eight-point lead,
26-18 into the locker room at the half.
Maquoketa held an 11-8 scoring
advantage in the third period to cut the Hawks lead to just five-points heading
into the fourth period.
The Cardinals Brad Cook
narrowed the Hawk lead to two points with a three point goal at the 7:15 mark.
Eric Crawfords driving lay up at the 6:05 mark gave the Hawks a three point
lead, 36-33. However, Maquoketa got back-to-back baskets in a 20-second span to
take their first lead of the game, 37-36 with 5:21 left in the game.
From
there on out it was anybody contest with each team trading turnovers. Over the
final five minutes there would be seven lead changes. |
After
Maquoketa went up by three-points, 45-42 on a Luke Patterson field goal with 2:38
left the Hawks BJ Hermsen canned a long three ball to knot the score at 45-45
with 2:07 left in the game.
Drew Burmahl of Maquoketa put the Cardinals
up 46-45 with a free throw with 1:47 left.
BJ Hermsen scored on a driving
lay up with 1:10 left to give the Hawks a one-point lead, 47-46. A basket by Maquoketas
Burmahl put the Cardinals back on top 48-4 with 35-seconds remaining.
Following a West Delaware time out the Hawks worked the ball around the perimeter
to a wide open Austin Cole who calmly dropped in what would turn out to be the
winning three-point basket with nine seconds remaining in the game. The
Cardinals last two shots were well off the mark. |  KEN

in the game but was huge in the rebounding department with 14 boards.

girls, boys sweep Starmont |
Tiffany Kruse tossed in 14 points as the Ed-Co Viking girls basketball team topped
the Stars of Starmont 52-37 last Tuesday night.
The Vikings got off to
a good start building a 16-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Starmont
was able to cut the Viking lead to six points by half time, 30-24, with a 15-14
scoring advantage in the second quarter.
The Vikings turned up the defense
in the third quarter, limiting the Stars to just five points while scoring 13
themselves to take a 43-29 lead by the end of the third period.
The Vikings
held Starmont to 30% shooting from the floor for the game (13-42).
This
was a good win going into the Christmas break, commented Coach Roger Wright.
I was happy with the way we started the game and also with the way we ran
our delay game at the end. I was also pleased with the way we shot free throws,
making 14 of 18.

Ryan Putz tossed in a season high
32 points for the Vikings and Matt Mescher added 10.
The two teams battled
to a 16-16 tie at the end of the first quarter before the Vikings tallied 22 points
during the second quarter to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room at the half.
Starmont held a 15-8 scoring advantage in the third quarter to lead by a point,
47-46 going into the fourth quarter.
The win moved the Vikings record
to 2-3.

girls top Maquoketa 50-47, now share WaMaC East Division lead |
Senior Jackie Mullis scored a team high 21 points to lead the West Delaware girls
basketball team to a 50-47 win over the Cardinals of Maquoketa last Tuesday night
in Maquoketa.
The win gives the Hawks a share of the lead with DeWitt
Central in the WaMaC Conference East Division, both have 3-1 records.
The Hawks shot just 32% from the floor against the Cardinals but cashed in on
16 of 25 free throws.
West Delaware held a three-point lead, 13-10 at
the end of the first quarter but trailed 20-19 at the half.
Sisters, Jenny
and Ashley Hood each nailed huge three-point baskets for the Hawks in the third
quarter as West Delaware outscored Maquoketa 16-7 to take an eight point lead.
Maquoketa put on a furious rally late in the game to cut a Hawk double digit lead
to three before the final buzzer sounded.
Mullis controlled the inside
for the Hawks against the Cardinals adding nine rebounds to her 21 points.
