West
Delaware girls improve to 3-5 with wins over Marion, Oelwein |
 The
Hawks Jackie Mullis gets a shot off while being fouled by a Marion player last
Tuesday night. Mullis scored just four points against the Indians but tossed in
a career high 29 in the Hawks 61-52 win over Oelwein in Manchester on Saturday
night.

The West Delaware girls picked up a pair of big wins last week.
On Tuesday
night the Hawks traveled to Marion where they overcame a four-point halftime deficit
to defeat the Indians 54-48.
Katie Wessels tallied 15 points and Sam Conrad
11 to lead the Hawks to the six-point victory over the Indians.
On Friday
night the Hawks lost a tough one-point game to the Bobcats of Western Dubuque,
37-36 before rebounding on Saturday night to defeat the Huskies of Oelwein 61-52.
Senior Jackie Mullis scored a career high 29 points and Katie Wessels added 12
as the Hawks topped the Huskies. |
At
Marion the Hawks trailed the Indians 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
After surging out to an 18-12 lead with an 8-2 run to start the second quarter
the Hawks scored just one point over the next five minutes and 10 seconds to trail
25-21 at the half.
A pair of Katlyn Heiserman free throws late in the
third quarter gave the Hawks a two-point lead, 34-32 heading into the fourth period.
West Delaware built its largest lead of the game, six points, 41-35 on a Katie
Wessels basket with 4:51 left in the game. Marion scored the games next seven
points to grab a 42-41 lead with 3:32 left.
The Hawks took control of
the game over the final three minutes to pick up a well deserved 54-48 win over
the host Indians.

On Friday night the Hawks traveled to Western Dubuque to take on the Bobcats where
they suffered a one-point loss, 37-36.
The Hawks led by five points, 19-14
at the end of the first half before Western Dubuque used a 10-6 scoring advantage
in the third quarter to cut the Hawk lead to just a single point, 25-24 heading
into the fourth quarter.
For the second straight game the Hawks struggled
from the free throw line. They attempted 28 foul shots and connected on just 14
in the one point loss.
With time running down and the Hawks trailing by
two points Samantha Hahn drove to the basket and was fouled. After a time out,
Hahn cashed in on both charity tosses to knot the game at 36-36 with just seven
seconds remaining.
The Bobcats converted a free throw with 3.4 seconds
left to take a one point lead.
Kadie Huttons shot at the buzzer
from nearly 30 feet hit the back of the rim and bounced away leaving the Bobcats
with a slim one point victory over the Hawks.
Hutton led the Hawks in
scoring with 10 points while Jackie Mullis was the Hawks leading rebounder with

night the Hawks Jackie Mullis scored a career high 29 points and pulled down 13
rebounds to lead West Delaware to a 61-52 victory over the visiting Huskies of
Oelwein. The Hawks broke out to a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter
and led 27-22 at the half.
A nice 20-13 scoring advantage in the third
quarter gave the Hawks a 12-point lead with just eight minutes remaining.
Katie Wessels chipped in with 12 points and Sam Conrad helped the Hawks control
the boards by pulling down 11 rebounds.
For the game the Hawks dominated
the back boards, 53-24 and held the Huskies to just 18 field goals in 59 attempts.
The Hawks shot 61% from the free throw line, making 11 of 18.
The Hawks
current record stands at 3-5 overall, 2-1 in the East Division of the WaMaC Conference,
good enough to be in a four way tie for first place.

boys top Western Dubuque and Oelwein |
The West Delaware boys basketball team topped Western Dubuque by 29-points, 69-40
on Friday night in Manchester before downing the visiting Huskies of Oelwein 59-41
on Saturday night.
Brett Manternach scored a team high 23 points for the
Hawks in their win over the Bobcats. He made 9 of 12 shots from the floor and
5 of 6 free throws.
BJ Hermsen was the only other Hawk to score in double
figures with 17 points.
The Hawks led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter
and bumped the lead to 16-points, 36-20 by half time.
The game was never
in doubt and the Hawks continued their good shooting in the second half to outscore
the Bobcats 33-20 to post the 69-40 win.

On Saturday
night the Hawks broke open a close game, 34-30 at the half with a huge 25-11 scoring
advantage during the second half to defeat the Huskies of Oelwein 59-41.
The Hawks had three players score in double figures led by BJ Hermsen with 17
points. Brett Manternach tallied 15 and Eric Crawford scored 13.
The Hawks
had their best ball handling game of the season as they turned the ball over just
nine times. They also pulled down 24 defensive rebounds while shooting 53% from
two-point range.
Oelwein held an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter
but the Hawks took the lead, 34-30 by the half and never looked back as they won
for the second time during the week.

end dominating week with Starmont team title |

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team upped their dual meet record to 5-1 with
a pair of WaMaC Conference wins on Thursday night in Van Horne. The Hawks
started the nights activities out with a 57-21 win over the Vikings of Vinton
Shellsburg.
The Hawks got pins from Tyler Manternach (145), Tony Marbach
(189), Jason Lux (119) and Adam Rave (135) to go along with four forfeit wins
to rack up the huge victory over the Vikings.
Nick Ketchum (125) was the
only Hawk not to win by fall or forfeit as he posted an 8-1 decision over his
Viking opponent. |
Next
up for the Hawks in the double dual were the host Bobcats of Benton Community.
The Hawks won 11 of the 13 contested matches against the Bobcats.
Following
Tyler Manternachs tough 3-0 loss at 145 pounds the Hawks rattled off seven straight
wins before giving up a forfeit at 112.
Dustin Jaeger posted an 8-1 decision
at 152; Nate Lahr posted a 10-2 major decision at 160; Jamie Vaske won a 6-2 decision

Tony Marbach won 4-0 at 189; Steven Broghammer won by fall in the third period
at 215; Paul Broghammer posted a first period fall at 275 and Nathan Vaske recorded
the seventh straight Hawk win with a first period pin at 103.
Jason Lux
(119) got the Hawks back on track with a first period pin.
The Hawks
then won the next three matches. Nick Ketchum with a 12-0 major decision, Zach
McCool and Adam Rave followed with first period pins to give the Hawks a 53-15
victory over the host Bobcats. |
On
Saturday the Hawks traveled to Starmont in a scheduling change from prior years
where they would have been at the Prairie Duals.
At Starmont the Hawks
would get a first hand look at two teams they will have to deal with come tournament
time, Waukon and MFL.
MFL had entered the tournament on a roll with some
very impressive wins and some salty individual records.
By the end of
the day the Hawks showed those in attendance that they could hold their own.
As a team West Delaware racked up 214 team points while placing all of their wrestlers
in the top five spots of the 13 team tournament.
The Hawks crowned individual
champions at 103 (Nathan Vaske), 125 (Nick Ketchum), 130 (Zach McCool), 152 (Dustin
Jaeger) and 160 (Nate Lahr).
Rounding out the Hawk line up were Jason
Lux (119) 4th, Adam Rave (135) 4th, Tom Gaffney (140) 5th, Tyler Manternach (145)
5th, Jamie Vaske (171) 3rd, Tony Marbach (189) 3rd, Steve Broghammer (215) 2nd
and Paul Broghammer (275) 4th.

The Ed-Co Viking girls basketball team suffered what Coach Roger Wright called
a disappointing loss at Center Point Urbana, 43-40, last Tuesday night.
The Vikings trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter and faced the same two-point
deficit, 19-17 at the half.
Ed-Co was able to make a nice run during the
fourth quarter, erasing a five-point third quarter deficit to take a 40-39 lead
late in the game. However CPU scored the final four points of the contest to top
the Vikings by three points, 43-40.
Mindy Meyer and Tiffany Kruse led
the Vikings in scoring with 12 and 9 points respectively. This
was a disappointing loss for us. We trailed the entire game untill the very end
when we had a 40-39 lead late. I was happy with the run we made at the end of
the game to give us a chance at the win, commented Coach Roger Wright. |

On Friday night the Vikings
hosted the Lynx of North Linn in Edgewood where they picked up a big 54-41 Tri-Rivers
Conference victory over North Linn.
Tracy Sullivan scored 15 points to
lead three Vikings in double figures. Mindy Meyer tallied 12 points and Tiffany
Kruse chipped in with 10 to help lead the Vikings to victory.
Sullivan
canned two of her three-point goals during the first quarter as the Vikings raced
out to a comfortable 15-5 lead.
The Vikings started the second quarter
on a 13-5 run, building their lead to 18-points at 28-10. Ed-Co held a 16-point
lead, 34-18 at the half.
The Vikings maintained a double digit lead throughout
the second half to win by a final margin of 13-points, 54-41.
I
was very pleased with the way we started this game, stated Coach Wright.
I felt we played a very good first half, both offensively and defensively.
We thought that we did a good job of rebounding, with a 10 board margin for the
game.

girls fall twice in Tri-Rivers Conference action |
The Maquoketa Valley Wildcat girls basketball team saw their overall record dip
to 2-5 following a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference losses last week.
On
Tuesday night the Cats traveled to Springville where despite a 48% shooting effort
from the floor they fell 65-55.
Megan Kramer and Melissa Wegmann led the
Cats in scoring with 17 and 10 points respectively.
Springville held a
17-10 point advantage at the end of the first quarter and led 38-31 at the half.
We didnt play very good defense and our rebounding was not what it
should be, commented Coach Tom Pestka.
The Cats turned the ball
over 18 times and pulled down just 17 rebounds.

On Friday night at home the Wildcats
hosted the Panthers of Monticello.
The Cats gave the Panthers a good run
despite shooting just 31% (13 of 42) from the floor.
Jodi Gibbs led the
Cats with 19 points, followed by Megan Kramer with 9.
Monticello led by
a single point, 17-16 at the end of the first quarter but was able to up that
lead to 10 points, 28-18 by half time.
A 19-9 run by the Cats during the
third quarter knotted the game at 37-37 before Monticello outscored the Cats 10-7
in the fourth quarter.

The Ed-Co Viking boys basketball team battled a good North Linn team to the wire
last Friday night in Edgewood before falling 57-54 to the Lynx.
Ryan Putz
and Matt Mescher each scored 19 points for the Vikings.
Putz scored nine
of his 19 points in the first quarter as the Vikings trailed 18-14.
Ed-Co
tied the game at 18-18 on a Matt Mescher basket with 6:10 left in the second quarter.
For the next four minutes the Vikings would score just two more points while North
Linn would pour in 10 to take a 10-point lead, 30-20 with just over a minute remaining
before half time. The Vikings came back with a 7-0
blitz to cut the Lynx lead to 30-27 on a Matt Mescher three-point basket just
before half time. |
Ryan
Putz scored the Vikings first seven points of the second half as the Vikings grabbed
a 34-30 lead at the four minute mark of the third quarter.
North Linn
then went on a 10-1 run to lead 40-35 at the end of the quarter.
Matt
Meschers three-point basket with 3:04 left in the game tied the score at 50-50.
North Linns Justin Waring made two free throws to give the Lynx
a 57-51 lead with 29 seconds left in the game. Mescher
canned his third three pointer of the game with 10 seconds left to make the final
