Hawks an impressive 5th at Five Seasons Extravaganza

After not being in action for a week due to Mother Nature creating dangerous road conditions last Thursday night which wiped out a WaMaC Conference double dual with Indpendence and Western Dubuque in Independence the Hawks hit the mat on Saturday at the Five Seasons Extravaganza.

The competition was very strong as usual in this dual tournament with some of the top Class 3A teams in the state in the field.

On the day the Hawks went 3-1 to capture fifth place in the 16-team tournament.

Their only loss of the day was to the eventual meet champions, Iowa City West 49-21.

The Hawks started the tournament with a dominating 44-27 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier.

KEN BOESENBERG / Press - West Delaware senior 152-pounder Dustin Jaeger records one of his four pins during action at the Five Seasons Extravaganza last Saturday in Cedar Rapids. The Hawks placed fifth overall with a 3-1 dual meet record in a very tough field of 16 teams, 14 of which were from Class 3A.

KEN BOESENBERG / Press - West Delaware senior 171-pound wrestler Jamie Vaske puts a lot of pressure on his opponent from Cedar Rapids Xavier. Jamie recorded a huge fall over his opponent from Davenport West in the final dual meet of the day.

The score was tied 12-12 after the first four weights with each team winning two matches by fall. Dustin Jaeger (152) and Nate Lahr (160) each recorded pins for the Hawks.

The Hawks built a 29-12 lead as they won four straight matches. Tony Marbach picked up a major decision (11-2) at 189; Steve Broghammer notched a 7-0 decision at 215; Paul Broghammer won by a third period fall and Nathan Vaske (103) followed with a 10-0 major decision to give the Hawks a 17-point lead.

After West Delaware gave up a forfeit at 112 freshman Jason Lux recorded a pin at 119 to build the lead back to 17-points, 35-18.

Nick Ketchum and Zach McCool finished up the Hawk scoring, Ketchum with a 10-45 decision and McCool with a first period pin.

The win moved the Hawks into the quarterfinals against the third seeded Trojans of Iowa City West.

The Hawks won three of the first four matches with Dustin Jaeger (152) and Tony Marbach (189) both winning by fall. Nate Lahr (160) picked up a 5-0 decision as the Hawks led early 15-6.

West would win eight of the next 10 matches to hand the Hawks their only defeat of the day, 49-21.

KEN BOESENBERG / Press - West Delaware sophomore Nick Ketchum tries to turn his opponent from Iowa City West. Nick won the match 2-1, one of only five wins for the Hawks over the eventual champion Trojans.

Nick Ketchum (125) and Tyler Manternach (152) both won hard fought decisions over the Trojan opponents. Ketchum won 2-1 and Manternach 4-2.

The Hawks third dual of the day was against a very good Cedar Rapids Kennedy squad.

Junior Nate Lahr (160) got the Hawks off to a good start with a first period fall.

Through the next seven weights the Hawks managed to win three matches while the Cougars picked up four victories to take a 21-18 lead.

Winning for the Hawks during that seven match stretch were Tony Marbach, 5-3; Steve Broghammer, 8-2 and Nathan Vaske by forfeit.

The two teams traded pins at 125 and 130 with Nick Ketchum winning by fall for the Hawks at 125.

Zach McCool (130) gave the Hawks a 30-27 lead with a first period fall. The Hawks swept the final three matches to rack up a well deserved 46-27 win over the Cougars.

Winning over the last three matches for the Hawks were Adam Rave (140) by fall; Tony Marbach (189) a 14-6 major decision and Dustin Jaeger (152) with a second period fall.

The win moved the Hawks to the placement round where they would battle Davenport West for fifth place.

The Hawks and West would put on a heck of a show with the lead changing hands seven times before the Hawks would emerge victorious, 42-37 when West had to forfeit to Nate Lahr at 160.

Jamie Vaske got the Hawks on the board first with a pin with just eight seconds left in his 171-pound match. He trailed 6-0 before getting a reversal and a three-point near fall. Without the fall he would have lost 6-5, a nine-point turn around in favor of the Hawks.

At 189 Tony Marbach lost his only match of the day 11-7, however Steve Broghammer at 215 gave the Hawks some cushion, 12-3, with a first period fall.

Nathan Vaske gave the Hawks an 18-9 led with a pin after heavyweight Paul Broghammer had lost by fall.

The Hawks had to forfeit at 112. That was followed by a Jason Lux loss by fall at 119 to give West a 21-15 lead.

The teams traded falls over the next four weight with Nick Ketchum (125) and Zach McCool (135) both winning while teammates Shawn Flanagan (130) and Adam Rave (140) both lost by fall.

Following a loss by major decision at 145 the Hawks trailed West 37-30 with just two matches remaining.

Senior Dustin Jaeger recorded his fourth pin of the day to cut the West lead to just one point at 37-36.
West then had to forfeit at 160, giving junior Nate Lahr his fourth win of the day and the Hawks their third dual win of the meet and a fifth place finish, 42-37.
