Five Hawks to run at State Meet

Hawk junior Ben Lechtenberg took first at Districts in the 400 M Hurdles to qualify for the State meet this weekend at Drake. At right, WD’s Tess Reinig will compete in the 100 M Dash at State. Reinig took second at Districts in 12.99 to qualify.
Ben McDonald and Ben Lechtenberg will make the trip to Des Moines this week for the 2008 State Track Meet at Drake University, along with the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Ben McDonald, Jake Wall, Ryan Gaffney and Adam Rave. This is a familiar trip for Lechtenberg, who was in Des Moines in March to compete in the State Basketball Tournament for the Hawks.
McDonald qualified for State in the 100 M Dash, finishing second with a time of 11.21. Lechtenberg ran away with first place in the 400 M Hurdles with a time of 55.78, almost a full second ahead of the second place finisher. The Shuttle Hurdle Relay team qualified in the third position with a time of 1:00.31.
As a team, the Hawks placed sixth with 37 1/2 points. Marion took first by 31 points, leaving Western Dubuque in second place.
The Hawks also finished eighth on Monday at the WaMaC meet held at Beckman.
Top finishers for the Hawks at conference included McDonald in third in the 100 M Dash; Lechtenberg in third in the 400 Hurdles; Lechtenberg in fourth in the 400 M Dash; McDonald in the 200 M Dash; the Shuttle Hurdle Relay of McDonald, Wall, Gaffney and Rave in fifth; and Adam Rave in sixth in the 110 High Hurdles.
West Delaware scored 23 points in the meet, while Marion took first with 119.

Hawk girls to compete in four State events

The West Delaware girls track team competed in the District Track Meet in Marion on Friday and qualified for the State Meet in four different events.
Freshman high jumper Allison Pasker tied for second with a jump of 4’10” to qualify; Tess Reinig placed second in the 100 M Dash with a time of 12.99; and the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Marcia Funke, Emily Havertape, Jessica McDonald and Tess Reinig finished third and qualified in the open time slot with a time of 1:07.61. West Delaware is the defending State Champion in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, but Havertape is the only remaining member from last year’s team.
West Delaware finished sixth overall at the meet, scoring 38 points. Mount Vernon ran away with first place, recording 149 points. Wahlert Dubuque finshed second with 106.5.
The State Meet will take place at Drake University in Des Moines this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Check out next week’s Press for results and pictures.
