Hot Hawks advance to State Tournament
by Alison Nesteby
|
And the beat goes on.....
The Hawks continued their domination last week with the biggest win of the season yet; the win over Crestwood of Cresco to qualify for the 2008 State Tournament.
The 69-61 win over Crestwood at the McLeod Center at UNI on Tuesday put the Hawks on a 12-game winning streak, and sent them to their first state basketball tournament since 2000.
While the Hawks didn’t pound all over the competition like they have been in the past weeks, they got the win in very good fashion.
WD started off the game slowly edging away from the Cadets, taking a three point lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-11.
Things went much the same in the second quarter, with the Hawks once again outscoring the Cadets, this time by four, 15-11. The Hawks went to halftime with a seven point lead, 29-22.
Senior BJ Hermsen and junior Ben Lechtenberg each scored 12 points in the first half for the Hawks.
Derek Klein started off the scoring for the Hawks in the third quarter, sinking a basket with 6:26 remaining. BJ Hermsen added a basket and a free throw with just under four minutes left to increase the Hawks lead to nine, but the Cadets weren’t going to let that sit for long. They started to chip away at the Hawks lead and trailed by just four at the conclusion of the third quarter, 44-40.
Both teams were hard at it in the fourth quarter, with a total of 46 points being scored by the two teams combined. |

Top: Senior Chris Crawford sinks one of his nine baskets on Tuesday against Crestwood. Crawford scored 16 points for the Hawks. Bottom: BJ Hermsen maneuvers around a Cadet defender on Tuesday. Hermsen grabbed a team high 15 rebounds and recorded 19 points. |
The Hawks scored five unanswered points to start off the fourth quarter. Crestwood added a couple baskets and cut the Hawks lead to seven before WD went on a scoring streak that would eventually seal the victory.
With 2:36 left, Ben Lechtenberg added two free throws, and Lucas Kafer sank one with 2:00 left to give the Hawks a 14 point lead, 62-48. Crestwood slowly narrowed the margin, but couldn’t catch the Hawks. WD gained possession with 11 second left and held the ball until time ran out. Then the celebration began.
Hugs and high-fives were aplenty from Hawks fans and players.
Lechtenberg was once again high scorer for the Hawks, putting up 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Hermsen scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Hawks, while senior Chris Crawford recorded 16 points and added nine assists.
The Hawks are slated to take on ADM (23-1) on Tuesday night at 8:15 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. If they win that game, they will play again Thursday night at 8:15 p.m.
