The Hawks will compete in the Regional Dual Meet competition tonight (Tuesday) in an attempt to advance to the State Dual Meet in Cedar Rapids, Feb. 23rd. |
The Hawks crowned eight champs and had three wrestlers place in the runner-up spot for a total of 11 individuals advancing to the District Meet next Saturday in Anamosa.
The Sectional champi-onship also comes with a spot in the Regional Dual Meet to be held tonight (Tuesday) in Monticello.
The Hawks will face off against West Liberty in the first dual of the night while Williamsburg and Maquoketa will go at it in the second dual.
The winner of each of the first two duals will meet for the Regional Championship and a trip to the State Dual Tour-nament at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
The State Dual Tour-nament will be held on Saturday, February 23rd starting at 10:00 a.m.
The eight champions for the Hawks started with PC McEnany at 103-pounds and ended with Nick Trenkamp at 285-pounds. Sandwiched between those two book ends were Nathan Vaske (119), Brett Yonkovic (125), Nick Ketchum (145), Adam Rave (152), and Carl Broghammer (189).
Placing second and also advancing to the District Meet were Pat Soppe (135), Devon Alber (160), and Adam Mossner (215).
Whether it is a district meet or a sectional meet when there is a wrestleback to determine who advances on and who doesn’t it gets very exciting and awful intense for those involved.
The Hawks faced just one wrestleback on Saturday.
Sophomore, Pat Soppe who has spent most of the season on the sidelines due to several injuries was back on the mat at 135 for the Hawks Saturday.
His final match of the day was in a wrestleback with Jesse Hansen of Anamosa who came into the meet as the number two seed with a record of 20-9.
Pat trailed 7-2 early in his match but scored six third period points to win 8-7 and advance to the District Meet next Saturday.
The District Meet will be a much tougher meet than the just contested Sectional Meet with the likes of Davenport As-sumption, DeWitt Central, Mt. Vernon and Wilton.
Those four schools combined to send 24 of the 28 participants in next Saturday’s District Wrestling Meet.
Assumption led the way with eight. DeWitt Central and Mt. Vernon each had five qualifiers while Wilton advanced six.
At the District Meet just the top two places will advance to the State Wrestling Meet in Des Moines starting on Wednesday, Feb. 13th.
There will be 18 ranked wrestlers at the District Meet.
Here are the rankings of the wrestlers at next Saturday’s meet.

Big win over Columbus moves Hawks into 2nd in WaMaC
by Alison Nesteby |
The Hawks continued to plow over their WaMaC opponents this past week with a big win over Waterloo Columbus.
Entering the Friday night game, the Hawks and Sailors were tied for second in the conference, but the Hawks now stand alone in the position with a 10-3 conference record and a 12-5 overall record. The win over Columbus extended the Hawks winning streak to six straight games.
Fans rolled in to watch the Hawks battle on Friday, and they got quite a show.
Waterloo jumped out first and took a 1-4 lead over the Hawks with the lone point coming off a BJ Hermsen free throw. Ben Lechtenberg hit a shot with just over six minutes left and Seth Engelken followed it up with a jumper at the five minute mark to give the Hawks the lead 5-4. The Sailors would fail to lead for the rest of the game.

West Delaware increased their lead to three at the end of the first, leading the Sailors 15-12.
The Hawks put up 15 in the second as well, with ten of those coming from Engelken. The Sailors stayed within four in the second quarter, but just couldn’t keep up with the dominant Hawks. They fell six behind with two minutes left and the score would remain 30-24 until the buzzer.
The Hawks started the third strong and scored eight unanswered point in the first three minutes, six from Hermsen, increasing their lead, 38-24. Engelken nailed one more basket with 4:07 left, and the Sailors started coming back after that. Columbus then went on a streak and narrowed the Hawks’ margin, 40-35. Coach Tjaden called a time out with 3:12 left to settle his team and they finished out the third holding a 48-42 lead. Both teams put up 18 points in the third.
The Sailors kept right up with the Hawks in the fourth but just couldn’t overcome the deficit.
The fourth quarter opened up with a Hermsen dunk, and two Lechtenberg baskets. With 6:30 remaining, the Hawks were up 54-42. Columbus added two more, but Lechtenberg added one before the Sailors took a time out with five minutes left to settle in, trailing 56-46.
Waterloo began to chip away at the Hawks’ lead and came within four before a WD timeout with 1:45 left.
Following the timeout, Lechtenberg added two more and the Hawks took their final timeout with 44 seconds left, holding a 63-57 lead.
The Hawks final three points came via Hermsen free throws, and Waterloo called a T with 14 seconds left, hoping a break might give them the momentum to come back from the 66-60 deficit they faced.
The Sailors hit one more basket with three seconds left, but had fallen behind too far in the first half to come back. They outscored the Hawks in the fourth 20-18 but couldn’t seal the deal and the Hawks continued their hot streak with the 66-62 win.
Junior Seth Engelken had his best night so far, shooting 75% on the night, sinking nine of 12 attempted shots. Lechtenberg recorded 18 points and Hermsen put up 16. Chris Crawford had 10 assists for the Hawks.
The Hawks were slated to host Central DeWitt on Tuesday, Jan. 29, but the game was postponed due to weather. The Sabers were supposed to come to town Monday night for the makeup, but weather caused another postponement.
The boys host Anamosa on Tuesday, and will hold Senior Night on Thursday at home against Benton.
