Vaske’s fifth place finish leads Hawks at State

The West Delaware Hawk wrestling team took seven state qualifiers to Des Moines last week looking to make a good run at a top five team placing.

Things didn’t work out quite as planned, but three of the seven participants did make it to the medal stand. Making it to the medal stand means that you are one of the top eight wrestlers in your weight and class.

That is an accomplishment that will probably mean more once the sting of losing goes away.

The top place winner for the Hawks was junior, Nathan Vaske who came home with the fifth place medal.

Senior, Tyler Manternach placed 8th at 171-pounds and another junior, Carl Broghammer placed 7th.

Freshman, PC McEnany (24-11) wrestling at 103-pounds for the Hawks saw his first action at the state meet. PC wrestled two matches, losing both but in the process gaining some valuable experience along the way.

He dropped his first match to Ben King of Centerville, 14-6 before losing to Kalen Greiner of Sigourney-Keota, 12-1.

King placed 8th while Greiner who entered the tournament with a 32-1 record did not make the medal stand.

In finishing 5th Nathan Vaske went 3-2 for the tournament and finished with a record of 34-3.

Nathan defeated Anthony Hable (26-12) of Decorah, 11-2 in his first match of the tournament. He then downed an undefeated wrestler, Jake Keller (39-0) of Columbus Junction 9-1 to advance to the 119-pound semi-finals.

In the semis Nathan fell to Matt Boyington of Humboldt, 3-2 in a very close, hard fought match.

After losing to Blake Sorensen (45-2) of Denver Tripoli by a score of 8-0 Nathan rebounded to defeat Jake Keller for the second time. This time the score was 6-0 in the fifth, sixth place match.

Wrestling at 125-pounds for the Hawks was sophomore, Brett Yonkovic. Brett won his first match of the tournament, 3-0 over Brady Milder (36-12) of Columbus Junction. In the quarterfinals Brett had to face top rated Andrew Long of Creston where he lost by fall in the second period.

His third match of the tournament was a tough one to swallow as he lost 4-1 to Justin Lopata of Benton Community. Lopata was the beneficiary of four stalling points. The match wasn’t particularly popular with many who watched the action.

Unfortunately one doesn’t always draw the best hand, that doesn’t help make the sting of a loss that more than likely shouldn’t have been go away but it is the cruel reality of how things happen sometimes.

Senior, Nick Ketchum represented the Hawks at 145-pounds and lost a pair of very tough matches to wrestlers that placed third and sixth overall in the 145-pound bracket.

In his first match he lost by fall to Mike England of Centerville (36-4) by fall in the second period. His second match of the tournament was decided at the very end in a decision that left Nick with a 6-5 loss to Gage Westbrook of Sergeant Bluff.

Senior, Adam Rave at 152-pounds had a tough draw following his first round win by fall in 44-seconds over Adam Klein (26-7) of Webster City.

In his second match Adam faced Nick Loughlin of Cherokee (36-0) and lost a very hard fought match, 5-2. Loughlin went on to be the Class 2A runner-up at 152-pounds.

In his third match of the tournament Adam faced off against Ethan Moorman of Centerville. The two battled to overtime before Moorman came out on top by a score of 12-10. Moorman went on to place 7th at 152-pounds.

Senior, Tyler Manternach competing at 171-pounds posted a 2-2 record during the week.

He won his first match of the tournament, by technical fall, 15-0, over John Hinshaw (31-7) of Iowa Valley. He then lost in the quarterfinals to Jesse Harris (23-3) of Creston, 8-4 to fall to the loser’s bracket.

On the back side Tyler won his first match, 5-3 in overtime against Jake Morris of Emmetsburg.

In his 7th, 8th place match he lost a very hard fought bout to Nick Larson of Algona, 6-4.

Junior, Carl Broghammer, 189-pounds wrestled a familiar foe in his first round match in Jordan Kaiser (31-4) of Benton Community. Carl capitalized on a Kaiser mistake during the second period to pick up the win by fall.

In the quarterfinals he fell behind, 7-2, early to Tomas Lira of West Liberty before falling by just two points, 11-9. Lira would go on to place second at 189 in Class 2A.

In Carl’s third match of the tournament he defeated Robbie Stephens of Harlan 1-0 to stay alive on the back side. He then dropped a 3-0 match to Luke Upah of South Tama to drop into the 7th, 8th place match. Upah would finish 6th for the Trojans.

In his placement match he again faced Jordan Kaiser of Benton Community. This time Carl won by a score of 6-0 to finish the tournament in 7th place.

The Hawks scored 33.5 points after scoring 29.5 early points to finish 14th in the overall team standings.

Class 2A was won by Ballard – Huxley with 181.5 points. Creston Orient Maxburg was second with 139 team points.

The Hawks could see either or both of those teams in this weekends State Dual Meet competition at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

In order for that to happen the Hawks will have to win a pair of duals tonight (Tuesday). They are scheduled to face off against West Liberty at 6:00 p.m. in Anamosa in a first round dual. Should they win that dual they would face the winner of Maquoketa vs. Williamsburg in their second dual of the night to determine who moves on to the state competition in Cedar Rapids on Saturday.

West Liberty had two wrestlers qualify for the State Tournament, one at 135 who lost both of his matches and Tomas Lira at 189 who was the runner-up at that weight.

As for Williamsburg they had four state qualifiers. Their wrestlers at 160 and 171 both posted 1-2 records while they had a state champion at 215 in Holden Blythe and a state runner-up in Austin Blythe at 285.

Maquoketa had qualified a pair of sophomores, one at 112 and the other at 160.

The other seven teams in Class 2A for the State Dual competition have been determined. They are as follows – Davenport Assumption, Sibley- Ocheydean, Creston, Dallas Center Grimes, Clear Lake, Ballard Huxley and Independence.

The first round Class 2A action will get underway at either 10:00 a.m. or noon depending upon the seeding. The second round will be held at 2:00 p.m. with the finals taking place at 6:00 p.m.

Final wins put Hawks in 2nd in WaMaC with 13-3 record
by Alison Nesteby

Things just keep on rolling for the West Delaware boys basketball team. They closed out their regular season last week with two wins over very good teams.

On Thursday, the Sabers of Central DeWitt traveled to Manchester hoping to get another win over the Hawks this year. The Sabers defeated the Hawks 65-55 on Dec. 14 in DeWitt, but wouldn’t like the outcome of this matchup as much.

The Hawks are on a nine game winning streak, taking 11 of their last 12 games; their only loss coming at the hands of WaMac Champions Marion. They don’t look to cool down anytime soon.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 20-14 lead in the first quarter, and just continued to increase it for the remainder of the game.

WD limited the Sabers to a mere nine points in the second quarter, while recording 14 of their own. The Hawks had the Sabers shaking, sending them to the locker room trailing the Hawks by 11.

Beginning the third quarter with a 34-23 lead sat comfortably with the Hawks, but they wanted to guarantee victory and weren’t going to let up. The Hawks added another 19 points in the third quarter, bettering the Sabers by 10, who scored just nine. The fourth quarter began with the Hawks leading 53-32.

BJ Hermsen battles with three Anamosa defenders on Friday. Hermsen was high scorer with 21 pts in WD’s 59-55 victory.
Waking up too late, the Sabers finally outscored the Hawks in the fourth quarter, but only by a three point margin; not near enough to come back from the 21 point deficit they faced entering the final eight minutes. The Hawks took the victory by a final score of 66-48.

Junior Ben Lechtenberg continued to lead the pack against the Sabers. He scored a team high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hawks. Chris Crawford also had another big night, recording 18 points and nine assists, while BJ Hermsen scored 10. Hermsen grabbed six rebounds while Lucas Kafer recorded six rebounds and nine assists.

West Delaware honored their five seniors at Senior Night on Friday in Manchester: Lucas Kafer, Chris Crawford, BJ Hermsen, Ryan Gaffney and Matt Walters.

The Hawks brought their A-game back again Friday against Anamosa, who has increasingly become better towards the end of the season. Anamosa gave Marion their only WaMaC loss.

Anamosa may have been getting better, but so have the Hawks, and although it was only by four points, the Hawks got the victory, and sealed their spot as WaMaC runner ups.

It was a close game through and through. The first quarter was closed with the Hawks leading by a single point. BJ Hermsen opened up the scoring for the Hawks with Lechtenberg adding the next four points. Anamosa held a 6-9 lead with 4:29 left before Hermsen nailed a three pointer for the tie.
Chris Crawford added another three pointer in the first for the Hawks.

The second quarter began with the Hawks up 13-12. And the second quarter reflected very closely how the rest of the game would go: point by point, the two teams were going to battle it out until the end.

Things went back and forth for the majority of the second quarter, but the Hawks took advantage when Anamosa failed to put up a single point in the last two minutes, and gained a four point lead over the Raiders, going to the half 27-23. That four point lead would prove to be huge for the Hawks.

Both teams must have had some pretty hefty pep talks at halftime, because they both came out firing in the third quarter. The Raiders outscored the Hawks for the first time all night, putting up 18 of their own in the third, while the Hawks were close behind with 16.

The final eight minutes began with the Hawks holding only a two point lead.

Both teams had fire in their eyes in the fourth, but the Hawks would gain back the two points they lost in the third, outscoring Anamosa by two in the fourth, 16-14.

West Delaware got the victory by four points, 59-55. The difference in this game was free throws. WD was 19-36 on field goals and Anamosa was 20-43. But West Delaware added 15 points from the line, while Anamosa only got six.

Senior BJ Hermsen closed out the regular season in style, scoring a team high 21 points. Senior Chris Crawford and junior Seth Engelken each scored seven. Hermsen grabbed seven rebounds and Lechtenberg added seven. Senior Lucas Kafter recorded a team high 11 assists.

The Hawks opened District basketball play on Monday at home against Indepenence at 7 p.m.. The Hawks clobbered the Mustangs earlier this season, 69-49. The winner of Monday’s game will take on either Waukon or Oelwein at Upper Iowa on Thursday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
