Hawks stomp Benton, improve to 11-3 in WaMaC
by Alison Nesteby
No matter how hard the competition tries, there has been no stopping the West Delaware boys basketball team in recent weeks. Since the Hawks battled hard with conference leading Marion on Jan. 11, falling by a mere six points, no one has been able to touch them. Thursday was no different.

Benton Community traveled to Manchester only to have the Hawks greet them with the same domination that has put the Hawks on a seven game winning streak.

The WD boys jumped out to an early lead on five Ben Lechtenberg points before Benton got the chance to put anything on the scoreboard. Lechtenberg contributed nine of the Hawks 17 first quarter points, putting them at a 17-9 advantage over the Bobcats.

Hawk senior Chris Crawford drives to the basket through two Bobcat defenders on Thursday in the Hawks’ 67-54 victory over Benton. Crawford had 13 points and nine assists.
Benton wasn’t going to give up that early, and fired 16 back at the Hawks in the second quarter, limiting the WD boys to nine. After the Hawks increased their lead to 11, jumping out 24-13, the Bobcats went on a streak and cut the Hawks lead, 24-20. With just a one point margin going into the half, 26-25, the Hawks were going to have to come back strong in the second half to keep their lead and seal the victory.

Fresh off the break, the Hawks and Bobcats battled back and forth, setting the score at 32-32 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. Senior BJ Hermsen hit two three-pointers and the Hawks held the Bobcats to just five points in the final four minutes of the third, while jumping out to a seven point lead, 45-38.

A high scoring fourth quarter was what Benton needed if they were going to somehow stop the hot Hawks. The Bobcats managed 16 points, but couldn’t match the 22 the Hawks added to their lead.

Lechtenberg added another eight points in the fourth quarter, while Chris Crawford hit six free throws to contribute to the Hawks fourth quarter dominance.

The Hawks outscored the Bobcats in all but the second quarter and sent them down the road with a 13 point loss, 67-54.

The Bobcats, who defeated the Hawks in WD’s second game of the season, saw a whole different team this time around. Their three point victory the first meeting was nothing compared to their three point loss this match.

The Hawks are slated to travel to Independence for a WaMaC matchup with the Mustangs, who took a loss at the hands of the Hawks on Jan. 18 in Manchester.

Adam Mossner at 215-pounds had another tough draw for the Hawks. He lost his only two matches to Drew Sheeder of Assumption 4-3 and 9-7 to Travis Keltner of Anamosa.

At heavyweight there were four of the top 10 ranked wrestlers in Class 2A in the district field, which meant that two of the top heavyweights in the state would stay home.

For the Hawks, junior Nick Trenkamp lost his first round match by fall to Will Maass of DeWitt Central. He rebounded with a 29-second pin over Brandon Smith of Monticello but would not get to wrestle back when Will Maass lost to Andrew Bush of Assumption 4-2 in the finals.
