KMCH Radio takes a direct hit

The KMCH radio morning show with Mike Johnson was more exciting than usual Thursday morning, April 24. At approximately 7:55 a.m., lightning struck the tower on top of the KMCH Radio building at 212 East Main in Manchester.
“It was like someone popped a balloon in my ear!” stated Johnson who was on the air when it hit.
Lightning traveled through the building into the studio causing damage to the tower antenna, broadcast transmission equipment, studio control board, computers, phone system, and other related equipment. KMCH was off the air until late Thursday afternoon. Much of the equipment is still down or under repair.
Station Manager Jackie Coates stated, “We’re very thankful no one was injured in this very dangerous situation. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we deal with repairs and replacing equipment.”
The lightning strike also caused damage to the Manchester Police Department with 911 service disrupted for a short period of time.
At Manchester City Hall, city officials say the lightning took out a couple of their computers as well, along with their server and phone system. The Manchester Fire Department was called to the scene but no fires were detected.

Just part of the burned debris that was found strewn in the back room at KMCH. “We were very fortunate no one was back there.”, stated Jackie Coates, station manager. MISSI THEDE / Press

Warren Coates and Mike Johnson assisted immediately with
salvaging and repairing damaged equipment from Thursday’s lightning strike.

Board of Supervisors receive updates on road projects
The Delaware County Supervisors met in regular session Monday, April 21. The supervisors acknowledged receipt of Jeff Zumbach’s manure management plan update and approved impoundment structures for property tax exemption for the 2008 valuation for Lahr, Baumgartner Revocable Trust and Altorfer.
Mark Nahra gave updates on road projects currently going on and explained that they are watching the pavement on River Road as well as County Road X31. Nahra stated that the only rock being hauled to county roads currently is for the X31 detour while the bridge is being repaired. The Fountain Springs road is to the point of allowing the truck through for the fish hatchery but is still not open to the public.
A visitor expressed concern about the shoulder grading being done in his area. Nahra agreed that this was a matter of interest and indicated that he or another member of the staff would check into it.
